This week on Metal Gear Mondays, Otacon and Snake go backpacking throughout Europe to try and find themselves.

[00:00:30]
Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to Metal Gear Mondays, the Metal Gear Solid podcast, where we cover all of the Metal Gear games in roughly chronological order.

[00:00:42]
From top to bottom, left to right, inside and out. As always, I'm your host, Alessio Somerville, and this week I'm joined by Isaac Lim.

[00:00:49]
Over eggs.

[00:00:52]
And continuing the British invasion, we have a guest.

[00:00:57]
And we have Patrick Smith, aka Patty Stardust from Twitter and the Twin Humanities podcast.

[00:01:04]
Patty, introduce yourself.

[00:01:05]
Did you like my glasses, Snake?

[00:01:10]
Working on that also.

[00:01:11]
That was really good.

[00:01:12]
Thank you.

[00:01:12]
That was really good.

[00:01:13]
Thank you.

[00:01:14]
Hi, everyone.

[00:01:15]
Yeah, thanks for having me.

[00:01:17]
I'm really, really excited.

[00:01:18]
I love Metal Gear.

[00:01:19]
I love Metal Gear.

[00:01:21]
If you've listened to my show, you'll know that I love Metal Gear.

[00:01:23]
I'm very, very excited.

[00:01:25]
Yep.

[00:01:26]
And I also want to throw a shout out to, honestly, I want to say it was Jeremy Greer that bridged these gaps because

[00:01:35]
Jeremy Greer, who is sort of friend of this show via Twitter and appears on a lot of duckfeed.tv podcasts.

[00:01:44]
And what is the Dark Souls?

[00:01:46]
Is it the haters?

[00:01:46]
The haters blog that he runs?

[00:01:48]
Yeah, darksoulhaters.tumblr.com, which is a collection of disgusting hate mail.

[00:01:53]
It's fantastic.

[00:01:54]
You shouldn't read it.

[00:01:55]
You shouldn't.

[00:01:57]
It's not.

[00:01:58]
It's bad.

[00:02:01]
But he was essentially, we were doing an all call looking for guests for this season.

[00:02:05]
And I know Cole Ross was on our Metal Gear Solid 3 season.

[00:02:08]
So I was just pinging random folks that I like to listen to.

[00:02:11]
And Jeremy, God bless us all, retweeted that message.

[00:02:16]
And then Patty discovered the show.

[00:02:19]
And would you like to tell us how you binged through 40 plus episodes?

[00:02:23]
Well, yeah.

[00:02:24]
No, I saw Jeremy pinging to Ask Cole and I was like, hang on, there's a Metal Gear show now.

[00:02:30]
Because I was thinking the other week, I like Metal Gear a lot.

[00:02:33]
I did a full run through the series before 5 came out.

[00:02:36]
And I was like, yeah, I could listen to people talk about that for a while, definitely.

[00:02:40]
So I searched it down and I downloaded the first episode and I banged through it.

[00:02:44]
And I think I sent you a tweet almost immediately after I finished it going,

[00:02:47]
hey, I really enjoyed that.

[00:02:49]
That was fun.

[00:02:49]
And then you invited me on.

[00:02:50]
It was three hours from discovery to invite.

[00:02:55]
I don't know.

[00:02:56]
I kind of made me feel like a big shot, man.

[00:02:59]
We've got a quick turnaround around here.

[00:03:01]
So no, I mean, truth be told, it's super weird.

[00:03:06]
It's not until I kind of poke my head out and realize what's going on.

[00:03:08]
But there are certain people online that I follow.

[00:03:11]
And I feel like I've got this little group of internet semi-celebrities that I like to enjoy.

[00:03:17]
I enjoy looking at their Twitter accounts and listening to them on podcasts.

[00:03:21]
And it's always so bizarre to me how easy it is to talk to folks like that just out of the blue.

[00:03:29]
You know what I mean?

[00:03:30]
Because I don't know.

[00:03:31]
It's a big deal for us.

[00:03:33]
And it feels nice to have you on the show.

[00:03:36]
Oh, thank you.

[00:03:36]
No, this is like, because as you alluded to, I have managed to bin through

[00:03:41]
almost all of your show in what?

[00:03:44]
The two months since I discovered it?

[00:03:46]
Two months?

[00:03:46]
Month and a half?

[00:03:47]
Yeah, something like that.

[00:03:48]
Yeah.

[00:03:48]
And since you were talking about recording Metal Gear 4, and I was like, oh, this is cool.

[00:03:51]
I can get through this in time, right?

[00:03:54]
And I haven't quite done it.

[00:03:55]
Yeah, which I think total it's like 72 hours or more.

[00:03:58]
Jeez.

[00:03:59]
Yeah.

[00:03:59]
And I don't get a lot of podcasts listening time.

[00:04:01]
This is mostly like walking to work and then walking back from work,

[00:04:06]
sort of half an hour at a time.

[00:04:07]
So I've been really just banging them in where I can.

[00:04:09]
And like on a day off, if I'm doing something where I don't have to listen to the gameplay,

[00:04:13]
like if I'm playing Peggle or something, I can put you on and then listen.

[00:04:16]
Because I don't like playing games where you can hear people talk while I'm trying to listen

[00:04:19]
to podcasts because I just I just can't focus and I miss stuff and I hate missing stuff.

[00:04:22]
It's really bad.

[00:04:24]
So yeah, over the last kind of month and a half, like, yeah, you guys, you're like,

[00:04:27]
you're like family already.

[00:04:28]
You're your voices in my head.

[00:04:30]
That's awesome.

[00:04:31]
That's perfect.

[00:04:33]
It just made all the year and a half of the show worthwhile to hear that.

[00:04:36]
So thank you very much.

[00:04:38]
If you can make someone laugh, it's sarcastic.

[00:04:41]
Yeah, exactly.

[00:04:42]
Well, so real quick, too, just to give people a little bit of a background on

[00:04:46]
on yourself.

[00:04:47]
How did you get introduced to Metal Gear?

[00:04:49]
When did you get super interested in it?

[00:04:52]
And like, when did it take hold and like,

[00:04:54]
Oh, OK, yeah.

[00:04:55]
Suck you in completely.

[00:04:56]
Yeah, this is great.

[00:04:58]
So I like many people was introduced to the series via the demo that came with the official

[00:05:05]
PlayStation magazine.

[00:05:06]
They were hoping up for a long time actually.

[00:05:08]
Oh, this is going to be amazing.

[00:05:09]
This is a sneaking game and they had some of the Shinkawa up as well.

[00:05:13]
Like, what the hell is this?

[00:05:14]
You know, yeah, it's beautiful.

[00:05:16]
In a time when every video and K character was I have a big arm muscles or my breasts are large.

[00:05:22]
Those were the character traits that used to be.

[00:05:24]
And it's like, this is cool.

[00:05:25]
Secret agent, dude.

[00:05:26]
This is kind of neat.

[00:05:28]
And the demo came down and it just like, I think I played that thing probably 15 times,

[00:05:33]
just over and over and over, just really enjoyed it.

[00:05:36]
And then, yeah, after that, I actually didn't buy it for a while because when it came out, I was 12.

[00:05:44]
Maybe 12.

[00:05:46]
And I didn't quite have the money to go out and buy a brand new £40 game.

[00:05:51]
You know, I didn't have that kind of money.

[00:05:53]
I was 12.

[00:05:55]
So what I ended up doing was maybe six months to a year later when it went out on a platinum,

[00:06:00]
which was like the budget range where they bring out the classic games that sell so much that have

[00:06:04]
been out for a year.

[00:06:05]
They bring out the £20.

[00:06:06]
Yeah.

[00:06:07]
I did well out of that.

[00:06:07]
Yeah, I think it's like greatest hits, greatest hits.

[00:06:09]
There you go.

[00:06:10]
Yeah.

[00:06:11]
That's exactly what we did.

[00:06:12]
So I went to my local dodgy trading shop and I traded it.

[00:06:16]
This is the greatest trade I've ever done.

[00:06:18]
I traded the Fantastic Four side scrolling arcade game.

[00:06:24]
It's,

[00:06:26]
gets worse.

[00:06:26]
And I traded Rascal for the PS1.

[00:06:30]
What?

[00:06:31]
That fucking game.

[00:06:32]
I have completely forgotten about that game.

[00:06:34]
With his little backwards ball cap.

[00:06:36]
Yeah.

[00:06:38]
It was terrible.

[00:06:40]
Yeah.

[00:06:40]
It was awful.

[00:06:41]
It's the worst thing I've played.

[00:06:43]
And like even thinking back, it's probably the worst game I think I've ever played.

[00:06:48]
It's pretty awful.

[00:06:48]
And I did a good job because what I did is I traded them for the best game I have ever played.

[00:06:53]
Yeah.

[00:06:54]
And then one.

[00:06:54]
And so that's the thing.

[00:06:55]
Yeah.

[00:06:55]
Yeah.

[00:06:55]
That's the thing I wanted to talk to you a little bit about as well.

[00:06:57]
So I know that we sort of did like a, which is your favorite Metal Gear question on a

[00:07:03]
listener response episode not too long ago.

[00:07:06]
And I think I talked to you about this on Twitter a little bit, but it seems like so Metal Gear Solid

[00:07:10]
one like above and beyond is like your favorite.

[00:07:12]
I've gathered.

[00:07:13]
Absolutely.

[00:07:13]
It's the easy answer to the question.

[00:07:15]
My second favorite is much harder to pick.

[00:07:17]
But the first one, because I played it so many times, I took a summer.

[00:07:20]
It was a summer holiday.

[00:07:22]
And as we've alluded to, I'm quite a pasty boy.

[00:07:24]
So I like to stay indoors.

[00:07:27]
And I think I went through Metal Gear Solid one again.

[00:07:30]
I think it was like between 10 and 15 times.

[00:07:32]
Definitely.

[00:07:34]
I just played it and played it and played it.

[00:07:35]
I couldn't get enough.

[00:07:36]
I loved it.

[00:07:38]
I didn't put, excuse me.

[00:07:39]
I didn't particularly speed run it or anything.

[00:07:40]
I wasn't trying to kind of do cool guy tricks and stuff.

[00:07:43]
I just really enjoyed, I just really enjoyed playing it.

[00:07:46]
You know, I just really enjoyed just the act of running around and calling people on the codec

[00:07:50]
and shooting goddamn Nikita missiles at stuff.

[00:07:54]
It was just fun.

[00:07:56]
And once that had happened, that was me done.

[00:07:58]
You know, that's every Metal Gear that's been out since.

[00:08:00]
I've been jumping on it as and when.

[00:08:03]
I have a stupid, not a terribly big collection, but one or two key pieces that are pretty impressive.

[00:08:10]
That's awesome.

[00:08:11]
I've got strategy guides.

[00:08:12]
I've got some of the art books.

[00:08:13]
I've got some of the soundtrack CDs.

[00:08:16]
I've been making a Papercraft Metal Gear Rex recently.

[00:08:20]
I have plans that came out with Metal Gear Solid 3, I think.

[00:08:24]
And I had these things for like 10 years and I finally printed them out a few weeks ago

[00:08:28]
and I've built one and it's gorgeous.

[00:08:30]
It's this little Rex down that sits up there.

[00:08:32]
I've also got a six foot tall fiberglass statue of Big Boss.

[00:08:37]
That's amazing.

[00:08:38]
Yeah.

[00:08:38]
Six foot tall.

[00:08:39]
Is it like the MGS3 one?

[00:08:41]
It is.

[00:08:41]
It's one of the promo models.

[00:08:42]
It's an out to shores.

[00:08:44]
Yeah.

[00:08:44]
My wife, at the time, my girlfriend, Laura,

[00:08:48]
it's just, we sort of talked about it like, oh, that's a really cool thing.

[00:08:51]
I'd love to have one of those.

[00:08:53]
And then she got it for me as a combined kind of birthday, Christmas anniversary,

[00:08:57]
everything this year present.

[00:08:59]
Yeah.

[00:08:59]
But it only cost her about £200, which is not that much really.

[00:09:03]
Yeah, that's crazy.

[00:09:04]
Because I could probably...

[00:09:04]
Do you ever wander around your house late at night and you mistake it for a human being?

[00:09:08]
Oh, a bit.

[00:09:09]
Well, it's in the spare room now.

[00:09:10]
It's in the reading room.

[00:09:11]
But when I was at university, when she got it to me, it was set up next to the bed.

[00:09:16]
So I'd wake up in the night and go, oh, yeah.

[00:09:19]
Or when I'd move my room around, I'd put it out in the corridor, walk past, see it,

[00:09:23]
absolutely cack myself, and then remember, my mom wouldn't let me have it in the house

[00:09:28]
when I moved home after uni.

[00:09:29]
She insisted on putting it in the garage.

[00:09:31]
Oh, yeah.

[00:09:32]
Yeah, I would assume.

[00:09:33]
Yeah, my mother would probably be like, what?

[00:09:35]
No, this isn't happening.

[00:09:36]
This is from what now?

[00:09:38]
So, yeah, who?

[00:09:39]
He eats what?

[00:09:41]
Excuse me.

[00:09:42]
But yeah.

[00:09:43]
Solid snakes out of fishy.

[00:09:46]
So since we are in Metal Gear Solid 4, before we dive into the section of the game properly,

[00:09:52]
I did want to talk to you about your experience with this particular game.

[00:09:56]
So being a fan of the first Metal Gear, how were you feeling the first time that you played

[00:10:03]
MGS4 and started to dig and get into it further along?

[00:10:08]
Because to some extent, this feels like a direct sequel to the first Metal Gear in a lot of ways.

[00:10:14]
In some way, it feels like a sequel to 1, 2, and 3 in different ways and in different places.

[00:10:21]
It feels like a direct follow-on, like some of the ideas from 2, some of the set-up from 1,

[00:10:28]
the stuff we'll get to in a little bit from 3.

[00:10:31]
It feels like a direct sequel to all of them.

[00:10:33]
They're really trying to tie in as many ends as it can, and it feels like a

[00:10:37]
any evolution of the series, but like a complete one.

[00:10:40]
The thing I've always liked about Metal Gear is while each game takes that

[00:10:43]
sort of core stealth gameplay, but it changes it so much between each game,

[00:10:47]
but they still feel like Metal Gear.

[00:10:51]
Yeah, no, absolutely.

[00:10:52]
I think particularly this one, because this one is so...

[00:10:55]
Like MGS4, I felt like at the time felt so far past all the other games from a gameplay and

[00:11:01]
like technical standpoint, but it was like mind-blowing how much it still felt like Metal Gear.

[00:11:06]
Oh, of course.

[00:11:07]
And I, well, it's something that actually helped me.

[00:11:10]
So there was a version that came out in the UK of Metal Gear 4, a special edition that came

[00:11:15]
with the Bluetooth headset, and the Bluetooth headset is kind of that Metal Gear Mark II,

[00:11:21]
that sort of rec style of sort of shape.

[00:11:24]
And if you pair it up while you're playing the game, and if you have it on,

[00:11:28]
when Otacon calls you when you're out in the game, it comes through on the headset.

[00:11:32]
Oh, that's amazing.

[00:11:33]
It's so cool.

[00:11:36]
Oh man, is that just that headset?

[00:11:39]
I think it works with every headset, but that's the only one I had for the PS3.

[00:11:44]
That's crazy.

[00:11:45]
And it was phenomenally good.

[00:11:46]
Like, oh my god, it's here, it's in my actual ear.

[00:11:50]
Well, I'm so like, so my wife goes to bed way earlier than I do, so typically like game time

[00:11:55]
for me is like the last two hours of the night, roughly two or three hours or whatever,

[00:12:00]
or like early mornings.

[00:12:01]
And so I'm so used to like with the PS4 being able to like plug things into the headphone jack

[00:12:06]
on the controller, that whenever I went back through to play MGS4, it literally drove me nuts

[00:12:11]
that there was like no way for me to kind of incognito listen to the audio without waking everyone

[00:12:18]
up in the house.

[00:12:19]
Did you have to do that thing where it's like, oh, I have to stand up and walk over to the TV.

[00:12:23]
Yeah, like plug it into the TV.

[00:12:26]
Plug in my headphones and then walk back like an animal.

[00:12:29]
Yeah, it was awful.

[00:12:30]
But I remember trying to pair up a Bluetooth headset and like the PS3 just won't push game audio

[00:12:35]
through it.

[00:12:36]
So it was like the weirdest thing.

[00:12:37]
So like that must be like an MGS4 specific thing.

[00:12:40]
That's really cool.

[00:12:40]
Yeah, it's only like because it doesn't happen as much as you think.

[00:12:43]
So I had this damn thing on for the whole game and it's maybe happened four times and it's not comfy.

[00:12:48]
It's amazing.

[00:12:48]
It's not ergonomic.

[00:12:49]
It's not comfy.

[00:12:50]
It's a blob sitting on the side of your ear, pulling your ear down the entire time.

[00:12:53]
But it's worth it when it kicks in like, yes, five hours.

[00:12:58]
Woo, that's amazing.

[00:13:00]
Well, cool.

[00:13:01]
Getting into where we are currently in our journey along Metal Gear Solid 4.

[00:13:07]
Oh, do I get to do the song?

[00:13:08]
Can I do the song?

[00:13:09]
Yeah, I was going to ask if you would.

[00:13:11]
Oh my God.

[00:13:11]
What song?

[00:13:12]
The honors are yours.

[00:13:13]
I'm really happy to say that it's time for

[00:13:15]
Bumbling in the dark with Isaac Wim.

[00:13:20]
Oh my gosh.

[00:13:22]
Take it away.

[00:13:22]
I think that was beautiful.

[00:13:24]
In the recent one segments, I've actually researched what we did.

[00:13:35]
Oh no.

[00:13:36]
Did you just tell everybody that you've been lying to us this whole time?

[00:13:39]
It's not fumbling on game if they queued Isaac Wim.

[00:13:41]
No, I had a revelation and I said, all right, this time I'm not going to look back and remember what we did.

[00:13:48]
So this is all from memory, guys.

[00:13:51]
Okay, gosh.

[00:13:52]
From the down.

[00:13:53]
This is going to be like OG fumbling.

[00:13:55]
Oh my gosh.

[00:13:57]
We're back to season one.

[00:14:01]
So let's see.

[00:14:04]
Last time we talked to another Englishman and he helped us walk through South America, maybe.

[00:14:15]
South Beach.

[00:14:16]
South.

[00:14:17]
That Los Angeles.

[00:14:19]
Locale.

[00:14:21]
What did we do?

[00:14:22]
All right.

[00:14:22]
So I remember there being a mansion somewhere in South America.

[00:14:33]
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

[00:14:37]
So far you're actually like, you're doing well.

[00:14:40]
Yeah, perfect.

[00:14:41]
It's weird.

[00:14:42]
I think we need to rename the segment like Isaac has short term memory problem.

[00:14:47]
Because it's really weird to me that it's like it's been seven days.

[00:14:51]
Well, I guess for that episode in particular, it's been like two weeks.

[00:14:54]
Two weeks, man.

[00:14:56]
Oh man.

[00:14:56]
Man.

[00:14:58]
Oh, I know.

[00:14:59]
We also were looking for Naomi and that's the extent of...

[00:15:06]
Yeah.

[00:15:07]
Okay.

[00:15:07]
I'll fill in some gaps so we did find Naomi.

[00:15:10]
Yeah, we absolutely found her.

[00:15:14]
And then we rescued her while a Romanian and a pretty boy

[00:15:21]
had a breaking sword fighting competition in the middle of the street.

[00:15:25]
Oh, that's right.

[00:15:26]
That was pretty much it.

[00:15:28]
Can I just cut in that break dancing sword fight?

[00:15:30]
It's the coolest thing.

[00:15:32]
Yeah, right?

[00:15:33]
It's insane.

[00:15:37]
I think we talked about this a little bit in the episode,

[00:15:40]
but I just don't understand whose brain can choreograph that.

[00:15:43]
Yeah, it's pretty.

[00:15:44]
Like two and T.

[00:15:45]
Like it's just the weirdest.

[00:15:46]
It just reminds me of kids like drawing in their notebooks during class,

[00:15:51]
like crazy stick figure fights or like a Newgrounds animation or something.

[00:15:56]
Yeah.

[00:15:56]
It's like who choreographs these bizarro sword dancing contests?

[00:16:02]
You mean you've never seen Kojima's Newgrounds videos?

[00:16:05]
That's...

[00:16:07]
That would be phenomenal, actually.

[00:16:09]
Apparently there's a Lego character based off of Kojima that is now like canon to the Lego universe.

[00:16:15]
So thank you.

[00:16:16]
Thank you for that.

[00:16:17]
It has like a little goatee and some sunglasses.

[00:16:21]
It's pretty wonderful, but anyway.

[00:16:23]
Yes, Isaac, you did a very good job.

[00:16:24]
I'm happy to report that there are some items in my refrigerator that take longer to spoil

[00:16:30]
than your memory of metal.

[00:16:35]
I promise I don't do this on purpose.

[00:16:37]
Oh, it's totally fine.

[00:16:39]
But we can see you're trying now.

[00:16:40]
You're trying.

[00:16:41]
Yeah, I can hear the veins tightening in your forehead.

[00:16:47]
We'll see.

[00:16:49]
Whenever you mention these little snippets, everything just comes back to me.

[00:16:54]
So...

[00:16:55]
That's true.

[00:16:56]
It's like a ripcord.

[00:16:57]
Yeah.

[00:16:57]
This all comes.

[00:16:58]
I just need a little prodding.

[00:17:01]
Ah, I see.

[00:17:03]
That's good.

[00:17:04]
It's the same excuse I gave all my teachers in grade school, but it's good.

[00:17:08]
I'll get there.

[00:17:09]
Well, very nice.

[00:17:10]
So on this week's episode, we are going to be covering Act 3 of Metal Gear Solid 4,

[00:17:14]
which is called kind of anti-climatically third sun and covers a fun little trip,

[00:17:23]
excursion to Europe, which we will be talking about now.

[00:17:28]
So away we go.

[00:17:40]
We're going to talk about this mission briefing.

[00:17:59]
So we are going back to this Nomad.

[00:18:01]
How did you guys, because no other game in the series has these sort of like weird briefing

[00:18:07]
interludes.

[00:18:08]
Mm-hmm.

[00:18:09]
Do you guys dig these or do you get like so lost in the weeds with all the buttons that

[00:18:13]
you can press?

[00:18:13]
Like, are you like super ADD throughout these entire...

[00:18:17]
I'm pretty overwhelmed.

[00:18:18]
Well, I mean, it's, there's a lot, I mean, there's a lot going on, but if you start getting bored,

[00:18:23]
you can just drive a little robot around.

[00:18:26]
Yeah, exactly.

[00:18:27]
You know, like, I'm getting bored.

[00:18:28]
I'm going to go on an adventure.

[00:18:30]
Yeah, I'm just going to start slamming people's shins as hard as I can.

[00:18:34]
Battery hunting.

[00:18:35]
Which gives you unlocks.

[00:18:36]
Yeah.

[00:18:36]
They give you, like they give you incentive to ram people with the Mark II.

[00:18:42]
That is my entire aim.

[00:18:44]
Every one of these things is get the Mark II out and just see who goes past and just run

[00:18:50]
at them.

[00:18:50]
Anyone that moves, you know, I think Ryden's lying on like a, on a bench during this one.

[00:18:56]
And I sat there watching him, just watching him like move, move.

[00:19:00]
Let me hit you.

[00:19:02]
That's what I imagine the Mark II that's sitting on the desk for the second part of this briefing.

[00:19:06]
I imagine it's just looking at everyone waiting for some shins to get exposed.

[00:19:12]
But yeah.

[00:19:12]
So before our actual briefing, we've got a little bit of an eggy interlude with Sunny doing some

[00:19:18]
more eggs and singing the periodic table, I believe, from top to bottom.

[00:19:26]
And Naomi comes in and we have this entire scene of Naomi and Sunny kind of doing this whole sort

[00:19:33]
of big sister, little sister, mother figure, ask, discussion, I guess, for lack of a better

[00:19:41]
phrase.

[00:19:41]
And it's weird.

[00:19:43]
It's super weird.

[00:19:44]
It felt very stilted.

[00:19:45]
Like the writing felt kind of cringy at times.

[00:19:52]
I don't know.

[00:19:52]
It's like, I get like Kojima and team, like you guys should probably just stick to like

[00:19:57]
the gruff military men that you guys know, because like the girl talk at the kitchen

[00:20:02]
sink just felt very like oddly put together.

[00:20:06]
Just talk about nanomachines every now and again.

[00:20:08]
You should cook these eggs because we're girls.

[00:20:10]
And by the way, nanomachines.

[00:20:12]
Yeah, we're girls.

[00:20:14]
We should look good.

[00:20:15]
I'm pretty sure it was like a direct line.

[00:20:16]
That's the line.

[00:20:17]
Us girls have to look their look our best, which I actually found quite kind of like

[00:20:21]
when some Naomi stuff starts unraveling later.

[00:20:26]
I actually found that quite quite a sort of personal thing for her.

[00:20:31]
Oh, that's true.

[00:20:32]
Putting on that face, you know, like, oh, no, we have to look, you know, like everything's fine.

[00:20:37]
That's a good point.

[00:20:38]
Yeah, I like that.

[00:20:38]
I was like, ooh, subtle.

[00:20:40]
Yeah, huh.

[00:20:41]
Yeah, and I will say this too.

[00:20:43]
It's like specific things.

[00:20:45]
And I'm going to go ahead and say that this this act in particular is going to shine a

[00:20:49]
light on like a lot of things that feel odd at first.

[00:20:56]
Like for instance, like sunny speech impediment is about to get addressed,

[00:20:59]
which I thought was very interesting.

[00:21:00]
I had completely forgotten about it.

[00:21:02]
And so when it came when it reared its ugly head up in the scene here in a little bit,

[00:21:06]
I was actually like, wow, that's a really interesting sort of take.

[00:21:11]
So anyway, so yeah, so Naomi and Sunny are kind of doing these cooking lessons and talking about,

[00:21:18]
I don't know, just kind of bonding.

[00:21:20]
One of the things that I thought was great was one of the little like duck figurines from

[00:21:24]
Metal Gear Solid 3 and like the original Metal Gear Online is the cooking timer.

[00:21:28]
Yeah.

[00:21:29]
Yeah.

[00:21:31]
It's pretty good.

[00:21:32]
And essentially, Sunny and Naomi kind of have this bonding moment and Naomi gives Sunny this

[00:21:38]
like pretty little flower behind her ear.

[00:21:40]
And they kind of talk about how Olga is not around to kind of be her mother.

[00:21:44]
And the whole sequence is like the whole, this whole like build up 30 minute briefing is just

[00:21:50]
Naomi talking about people's relatives and then finding out that they're dead.

[00:21:53]
Then apologizing.

[00:21:54]
Like back to back to back.

[00:22:01]
Oh my gosh.

[00:22:02]
So yeah, she's pretty inconsiderate and mean, but she didn't know any better.

[00:22:06]
So it's fine.

[00:22:07]
Naomi, the walking, the walking embodiment of the awkward penguin meme.

[00:22:12]
Yeah, exactly.

[00:22:13]
Yeah, I'm surprised that she wasn't like snake.

[00:22:15]
You look great for being pregnant and snakes like I'm not.

[00:22:19]
I have expected that, but oh my gosh.

[00:22:23]
But yeah, it's pretty good.

[00:22:25]
Moving sort of along into the actual briefing.

[00:22:28]
We've got a little bit of this like big boss liquid and solid snake DNA lesson here at the

[00:22:33]
beginning, which for I guess all intents and purposes, like we already knew most of this.

[00:22:39]
They're kind of reiterating that like all three of them are similar, but different enough,

[00:22:45]
which is why like the original Fox die could target liquid without killing solid and vice versa.

[00:22:52]
And that we did know that that was one of the key

[00:22:54]
points at the end of Metal Gear one.

[00:22:57]
Yeah, exactly.

[00:22:58]
Because it's like how is snakes still alive after the events.

[00:23:01]
He got all these flawed, recessive genes.

[00:23:06]
Yeah, exactly.

[00:23:07]
I wish I could do that voice because like in my mind, I have so many funny quotes that would

[00:23:12]
be perfect in that voice, but I don't even want to attempt it.

[00:23:14]
But it is a bad British accent, though.

[00:23:17]
It is really bad because none of us talk like this,

[00:23:21]
except when we're on the radio.

[00:23:25]
I really wish that we just need to slowly get more and more British folks to start using

[00:23:31]
that voice until like suddenly it is just the norm fumbling in the dark with Isaac.

[00:23:38]
That's always pretty great.

[00:23:40]
Yeah, when and when that being said to and I cannot remember his name, who voices liquid.

[00:23:48]
Oh man, what is his name?

[00:23:49]
Camplock.

[00:23:51]
Was that?

[00:23:52]
Uh, no, I'm trying to think maybe.

[00:23:56]
Yeah, I think you might be right.

[00:23:57]
So he also voices the male blood elf from World of Warcraft.

[00:24:01]
So there are a lot of really weird like vocal lines in that style because he's essentially

[00:24:07]
still liquid.

[00:24:08]
But he's saying things about like Glory to the Sunwell or whatever the hell they say in those

[00:24:13]
games.

[00:24:14]
But it's cam clock.

[00:24:15]
I was right.

[00:24:15]
It's cam clock.

[00:24:16]
Yeah, that's awesome.

[00:24:17]
I don't know why in my head I was confusing Cam Clark for Quentin Flynn,

[00:24:20]
who's writing his voice actor.

[00:24:22]
But anyway, there are a lot of really fun flashbacks in this sequence, specifically when

[00:24:27]
Naomi's talking about the DNA.

[00:24:30]
It's super funny because the flashback is just liquid being like, we're not copies of our father.

[00:24:36]
It just like barely the vocal line just kind of comes out of nowhere.

[00:24:39]
And there are a couple of these like hamfisted vocal lines kind of as we go.

[00:24:45]
Like towards the end, there's a very specific one with Vulcan Raven where I was like,

[00:24:48]
fucking nobody has played this far and still in the back of their head is like, what does

[00:24:53]
he mean?

[00:24:54]
Eastern blood.

[00:24:57]
So it's kind of yeah, it's weird.

[00:24:59]
But they again, like Patty had mentioned at the top of the episode, there are a lot of

[00:25:03]
loose ends getting tied up in the next like three hours of this game.

[00:25:06]
Yeah.

[00:25:06]
So did you guys slam Otacon with the mark to?

[00:25:11]
No.

[00:25:12]
Yeah, well, everyone.

[00:25:14]
Yeah.

[00:25:15]
And thing is, you say, slam the shins.

[00:25:16]
I actually make the robot stand up.

[00:25:18]
I use the up button and makes the robot extend up.

[00:25:21]
So I'm slamming.

[00:25:21]
You can slam them in the ass.

[00:25:26]
That's good to know.

[00:25:26]
Oh my gosh.

[00:25:27]
I'm literally going to start doing that or stick to my just trusty like punch them in the genitals

[00:25:33]
and just start using the mark to just whip them out slam them.

[00:25:37]
Yeah.

[00:25:38]
My problem is I need to concentrate on what they're talking about.

[00:25:43]
And if I start using the mark to, I'm like, I get too distracted with things.

[00:25:50]
Yeah, that happened to me actually in this in this briefing sequence.

[00:25:54]
And I actually had to like verify part of the first section of the briefing on YouTube.

[00:25:59]
After having so much fun, I totally fucking forgot what everybody was talking about.

[00:26:03]
I can just see snakes sitting at the end of the couch just playing with the robot.

[00:26:07]
Like, right.

[00:26:07]
Ready to go.

[00:26:08]
It's like, wait, what?

[00:26:10]
What are we doing?

[00:26:10]
Where are we?

[00:26:11]
What's going on?

[00:26:12]
We're after what now?

[00:26:14]
But, but yeah, so you can get Otacon's face camo if you slam into him, which is why I bring it up.

[00:26:18]
I'm going to get your face from your ass.

[00:26:22]
Which is super fun for the next part of the game where you can kind of be dressed up like this

[00:26:25]
like film noir like detective with with Otacon's face if you want, which is great.

[00:26:33]
The only thought I could think of while this whole scene was kind of playing through was that

[00:26:36]
Sonny's in the background using like seven keyboards and like four computer monitors.

[00:26:42]
And you just see like windows opening and closing all over the monitors.

[00:26:45]
And I'm just like, what the fuck is she doing?

[00:26:48]
That's not how human beings use computers.

[00:26:50]
So I'm not quite sure what's happening.

[00:26:54]
But essentially we get a little bit of, to not go crazy in depth on this specific portion,

[00:27:00]
we essentially get our kind of big bad guy and the reason for it through this.

[00:27:06]
So essentially what we're being told is that the genetic code for the, for Big Boss is being

[00:27:15]
utilized by, or the plot is for liquid to utilize that to take control of the entire system.

[00:27:23]
Which I wasn't quite able to wrap my head around why Big Boss's genetic material can access SOP

[00:27:29]
other than it was part of Naomi's like failsafe proprietary sort of program that she built.

[00:27:37]
I don't know if I just like missed a couple lines of dialogue, but I was kind of confused as to like

[00:27:41]
why it's specifically Big Boss's genetic material that can get people access.

[00:27:46]
In the Metal Gear universe, Big Boss is basically Jesus.

[00:27:48]
So that's true.

[00:27:50]
Like if someone wanted to access it.

[00:27:52]
Yeah, if we're gonna let anyone in, let him in.

[00:27:55]
Yeah.

[00:27:56]
Maybe.

[00:27:56]
That's true.

[00:27:56]
I think everybody, I think everybody in the military, in the Metal Gear universe just always

[00:28:02]
make sure that Big Boss, Big Boss is the admin username and password for all,

[00:28:07]
for all computers just in case he needs it.

[00:28:09]
You know what I mean?

[00:28:11]
So anyway, and then Naomi just drops a bomb that blew my hair back because I completely

[00:28:17]
forgotten about this, but she was like, Big Boss's body is still alive.

[00:28:21]
Even, yeah, everyone in the Nomad was like, say what?

[00:28:26]
And she essentially says like, oh, he's a vegetable and essentially his brain dead,

[00:28:30]
but they do have his body and it's still like functioning,

[00:28:34]
which sounds very expensive was the first thought that I had.

[00:28:39]
So you call it a, I think she thinks it's a biomort, which is that's a cool thing.

[00:28:45]
Yeah, she just drops that word out and then we never hear it again.

[00:28:50]
And everyone in the Nomads like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, biomort, yeah, duh, of course.

[00:28:56]
But yeah, and then essentially we're told that like Liquid is trying to find the

[00:29:04]
body of Big Boss in Europe and grab it.

[00:29:07]
And so Snake has to stop him, which we had kind of alluded to on the last episode.

[00:29:12]
And Ryden kind of comes to just long enough to also be like, oh yeah, do that.

[00:29:18]
And then they're like, okay, cool.

[00:29:21]
Besides that, Sunny exclaims that she was able to like hack AT Security and the Patriots.

[00:29:27]
And she says that she found it.

[00:29:30]
And yet at the same time, I'm not really like, if everyone in the room is agreed that we should go to this European country to find this body.

[00:29:36]
It's, it feels kind of weird that every secondary character is just chiming in with, oh yeah, by the way, you, you guys should probably go to Europe.

[00:29:44]
It's like, okay, we, yeah, we got it.

[00:29:45]
Like, uh-huh, yep, Europe.

[00:29:47]
Well, they're giving everyone stuff to do, aren't they?

[00:29:50]
Yeah, essentially.

[00:29:51]
You know, Big Boss has got Liquid to find.

[00:29:52]
They've got to find some blood for Ryden.

[00:29:56]
Yep, they need more artificial blood.

[00:29:58]
Oh yeah.

[00:29:59]
And so this kind of draws me to my biggest like what the fuck moment.

[00:30:03]
And it's a little confusing to me.

[00:30:07]
But essentially after we get through this kind of monologue where Otacon's talking about how like PMCs are like forcing the scientific community to get it.

[00:30:15]
And how he needs this dialysis.

[00:30:17]
But the biggest thing was that all of a sudden, uh, tying the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 into sort of post-Metal Gear territory,

[00:30:27]
Ryden just casually name drops that Dr. Madnar can fix him.

[00:30:31]
And then he's like, oh, I'm gonna go to the next level.

[00:30:33]
And he's like, oh, I'm gonna go to the next level.

[00:30:35]
And he's like, oh, I'm gonna go to the next level.

[00:30:37]
And he's like, oh, I'm gonna go to the next level.

[00:30:39]
And he's like, oh, I'm gonna go to the next level.

[00:30:41]
And that's the one that's usually named drops that Dr. Madnar can fix him and that he's located in Eastern Europe.

[00:30:47]
Um. And Snake should know that name very well.

[00:30:51]
And yet Snake does not even register.

[00:30:55]
Anything. It was the weirdest thing.

[00:30:57]
Like no one, they're all just like, oh, okay, this guy Eastern Europe.

[00:31:01]
Great. Let's do it.

[00:31:03]
And I was just like, I don't, Snake, you've you've personally like had conversations with this man and duplicates of this man.

[00:31:10]
this man and like stop this man multiple times. Like why are you not asking how he's still

[00:31:16]
alive?

[00:31:17]
Well big boss is alive still. Everyone's still alive. That one's really dead.

[00:31:22]
That's true. At this point Snake's just like trying to get a cigarette and he doesn't care

[00:31:26]
about anything else. That's what I, that's the plot device that I'm gonna use is that

[00:31:30]
Snake just wants to smoke. But again he gets shut down and his psych meter goes down yet

[00:31:36]
again and makes the fun little sound. Yep. And then we smash cut into Autocon typing like

[00:31:45]
a madman with a picture of his sister Emma pulled up and this is where Naomi kind of

[00:31:52]
this way. Yeah this is number two. Yeah it was so okay so to kind of lay the scene for

[00:31:59]
folks that are kind of listening and haven't been able to play. It's this weird moment

[00:32:05]
where Naomi takes the sort of USB drive that she had around her neck that we had seen prior

[00:32:10]
with her kind of duplicating Snake's biological data when we were in South America. She like

[00:32:16]
takes it off of her necklace and like goes as if she's like gonna talk to Autocon about

[00:32:21]
like giving it to him. But she has this kind of like should she give it to Sunny? Should

[00:32:26]
she give it to Autocon kind of like situation because he keeps talking about how like Sunny's

[00:32:30]
the real brains of the outfit but Sunny's sleeping. Autocon's kind of talking about how

[00:32:35]
emotionally hurt he is that his sister is dead and like Naomi kind of keeps going back

[00:32:40]
and forth but then never makes a decision and kind of ultimately just like puts it back

[00:32:45]
on her necklace and it feels very I don't know it's an odd moment. Oh see that's interesting

[00:32:50]
because I read this bit I read this different and maybe the game will contradict me later

[00:32:54]
because I haven't played this in a very long time so I'm only up to date where we are.

[00:32:58]
I saw that as Naomi trying to plug that into one of their computers to either plant something

[00:33:02]
or take something. I see her double-ading and she's trying to talk and maybe she can't quite

[00:33:08]
get the opening which is why they're being awkward and kind of walking back and forward

[00:33:11]
and it's like he's still looking at me he's still looking at me he's not going to sleep

[00:33:15]
he's gonna stay up all night typing goddamn. Yeah freaking nerds man. I never even thought

[00:33:20]
about it. Nerds man. That's a good point yeah. That's how I read it because she's she's

[00:33:24]
shady shit man. Yeah she is super shady though I will say the entire time so again

[00:33:30]
Otacon and Naomi clearly have some sort of like feelings for each other and there's this

[00:33:35]
just very awkward tension in the air where now that you mentioned the point that you make Patty

[00:33:41]
I'm curious as to whether or not like it's awkward tension for Naomi because she doesn't want to do

[00:33:48]
this even though it will help her achieve her goal and Otacon might genuinely have feelings I

[00:33:55]
don't know if they both genuinely have feelings but either way there's like on top of this USB

[00:34:00]
thumb drive situation that's happening and and Otacon kind of opening up about his personal

[00:34:05]
life Naomi and Otacon are doing this very awkward like are we gonna kiss we're not gonna kiss

[00:34:11]
there's interruptions we're getting very close to each other's mouths now we're not snake

[00:34:16]
secretly awake and watching us it's creepy it's the word science holics like three times it's

[00:34:22]
like dude stop saying science holics that's not a real word yeah you've been on 4chan for too long

[00:34:30]
it's super weird but then finally in the whole time I was like oh man Otacon blew it and my favorite

[00:34:37]
part is just like at the end Naomi like pulls him into the helicopter and just like closes the door

[00:34:42]
and I was like fuck yeah Otacon like good for you good for you good job having sex with someone

[00:34:48]
that's not your stepmother go on yeah right right yeah you did it yep um but yeah so besides that

[00:34:56]
I think one other thing that I wanted to point out that actually kind of cracked me up was like

[00:35:00]
Emma so EE's picture is up on the screen and it's like her MGS2 model like screenshot and uh Naomi

[00:35:06]
is doing her awkward like oh I thought that was your girlfriend and Otacon's like quit twisting the

[00:35:11]
knife in my back she's dead um and the thing that I find the funniest is that Otacon was like

[00:35:19]
and then vamp killed her and this is the thing that I love about the Metal Gear universe is that

[00:35:23]
you can fucking name drop the first name of somebody who killed your family member and everyone's

[00:35:30]
like oh shit not vamp and it's like oh I'm great I'm glad that there's 30 people whoa okay here's

[00:35:38]
my question to you then this yo uh what's vamp's surname

[00:35:46]
Salot vamp Salot I don't know

[00:35:49]
I don't know

[00:35:50]
I don't know

[00:35:52]
yeah

[00:35:52]
Acula

[00:35:54]
Iyer his last name is Iyer

[00:35:57]
Vampire

[00:36:00]
yes I don't know

[00:36:02]
does my name is Nito in cog Nito yes

[00:36:04]
yes never find me

[00:36:07]
well and I get it like I I understand like Naomi knows who vamp is Otacon knows who vamp is I get

[00:36:12]
it but I just I saw an opening to like poke fun at Metal Gear in a way that like people poke fun

[00:36:17]
at Star Wars which is like everyone is connected but anyway Luke which Luke there's 400 of them

[00:36:27]
oh the magic one oh the magic one say magic Luke next time the giant Luke yeah

[00:36:31]
yeah

[00:36:32]
Luke you're on

[00:36:36]
but yeah so please everybody put your pitch forks away I also love Metal Gear

[00:36:40]
just just poke I'm just taking the piss you guys okay oh um yeah I'm also reappropriating

[00:36:47]
cultural shorthand so come at me guys come at me um there was one really really really weird

[00:36:57]
sort of thing so when they Naomi and Otacon kind of discussed Sonny's background so we we've

[00:37:03]
understood the Raiden rescued Sonny from the Patriots for Olga like that's been said however the

[00:37:09]
extra sort of wrinkle that we hear here is that while Sonny is sleeping Otacon mentions to Naomi

[00:37:17]
that the reason why Sonny sort of has like a speech impediment and the reason why she's

[00:37:21]
kind of socially awkward and very intelligent and knows how to use a computer super well

[00:37:25]
is because the entire time that she was in the possession of the Patriots her entire life was

[00:37:30]
on the net so she like exclusively was just online all the time and had like no window into the

[00:37:39]
outside world so essentially we see this what 10 11 12 year old girl who was essentially raised by

[00:37:48]
the internet which sounds like a fucking terrible social experiment but yeah that's fair that is

[00:37:54]
how children are raised these days that's true iPads raised the world yep so but like okay so here's

[00:38:01]
the thing so they say she's not been outside like in the real world yet so they've had her for a little

[00:38:06]
while at this point right what do they do open the back door of the plane when they land they've

[00:38:12]
got to land every now and again just let her out nope where does she pee I don't understand like where

[00:38:17]
does she eat food do they only they like she's a bubble girl do this is like John Travolta from the

[00:38:22]
70s just rations and eggs that's all they get rations and eggs that's it yeah rations and

[00:38:26]
eggs that sounds horrible everyone's cholesterol is through the fucking roof in that airplane

[00:38:33]
oh but yeah so anyway oh god can you imagine what the bathroom smells like at the nomad

[00:38:39]
oh jeez just the because the snake's old now so his old man farts are even worse

[00:38:44]
there's like little egg explosions silently maybe that's why he's always smoking he's trying to

[00:38:52]
light a match get rid of the methane in here I like that I like that a lot but yeah so then uh

[00:39:00]
Hal says some very creepy shit um no Naomi says it which is quote she hasn't even been born yet

[00:39:07]
she's still in the womb and there's just something weird about uh so a there could totally be a sitcom

[00:39:14]
where it's sunny and her two dads um but b besides the awkward sitcom of being raised by a geriatric

[00:39:20]
and a scientist uh it seems like she's in some sort of mechanical womb now as well so uh yes

[00:39:28]
and for some reason and patty I know that you've been uh in the midst of uh this this chokehold on

[00:39:33]
your life as well but the moment she said that I was just immediately uh my mind thought of the

[00:39:38]
weird mechanical womb from uh the newly released near automata so I had that picture in my brain but

[00:39:48]
quite good that's quite good game that's a good game is quite good game um but yes did you guys

[00:39:54]
notice the chickens that are named liquid and solid by the way in the cutscene my mind but there's

[00:39:59]
a solid as well you can find them when you're running around with the mark too early you can see

[00:40:03]
there's a solid up top yep oh no so we got snakes named liquids solid and solid us now we got

[00:40:12]
chickens named liquid solid and solid we got grown men with these names uh okay so yes that is that

[00:40:20]
that concludes our briefing uh howl and Naomi forever uh and uh we begin act three part one

[00:40:45]
yes so as we mentioned it's third son because they ran out of snake names I guess and didn't

[00:40:49]
want to use solid as the son um and uh we're at a european train platform does anybody remember

[00:40:54]
what goddamn country we're supposed to be in because I can't quite make out where this is Europe

[00:41:00]
it's just just a narrow Europe yeah europe is a country um I mean England isn't England isn't part of

[00:41:06]
that anymore oh no you're right England yeah different countries 2016 vote people of the world

[00:41:13]
good job um my heart my heart goes out to all of you guys hey at least you guys don't have a

[00:41:17]
fucking clown running your country shooting missiles yeah yeah we've got a different plan who's

[00:41:23]
being like good job clowns okay so yeah in terms of which country it is I've been what part of

[00:41:29]
really paying attention to this because I sort of think hey on what where are we and I was trying

[00:41:33]
to guess it I think they keep it vague intentionally because in act one they're in the Middle East in

[00:41:38]
act two they're in South America oh that's true is there in Europe's that way they can't pin it on

[00:41:43]
any particular country being full of bad people yeah that's true yeah because I noticed um having

[00:41:51]
spent a considerable amount of time in Europe in the early part of my life I've noticed uh there are

[00:41:57]
quite a lot of things that reminded me of like France um specifically they were like very Paris

[00:42:01]
style sort of side streets and stuff like that I thought Germany but then they say it's Eastern

[00:42:07]
Europe and that's like the Albania sort of side yeah because that's the thing too is when they

[00:42:11]
said Eastern Europe because to me it definitely reminded me of Germany or reminded me of France

[00:42:14]
or reminded me of Italy um but when they said Eastern Europe I wasn't sure if Eastern Europe is where

[00:42:21]
Raiden was taken and Snake was dropped off in a different part of Europe um but yeah I've actually

[00:42:28]
not been any farther east than like Amsterdam so I'm not sure where the hell this could be

[00:42:36]
my volume was so low at one point that I was hoping somebody would be speaking in like a native tongue

[00:42:41]
that I could hear but it was just English very quietly so but yeah so we're in one of the one of

[00:42:46]
the countries that one of the countries that vote for each other during the Eurovision Song Contest

[00:42:50]
that bit of the world yes I'm not upset um likewise there is mention um we'll get into it in a little

[00:42:59]
bit but there is mention of quote the president and yet like president of what country like what the

[00:43:04]
fuck are we talking about so there are a lot of just like generic very general terms being thrown

[00:43:09]
around um which is weird coming from a series that gets like almost like autistic detail oriented

[00:43:16]
about very strange specific details um but yes anyway um so what's gone on here just to kind of

[00:43:25]
set the scene a little bit is we are sort of opening in this like train depot um it is uh the

[00:43:31]
United States PMC Ravensward is declaring a state of emergency uh to root out local resistance in

[00:43:37]
this generic Europe um and the Ravensward is actually part of the Outer Heaven sort of PMC group

[00:43:46]
and they are targeting the resistance actually has a name in this country as opposed to just the

[00:43:51]
militia here the resistance is referred to as Paradise Lost Army but they only mention it here

[00:43:57]
and they never say it again yeah it's super weird but it's really clever like yeah I know I did get

[00:44:04]
it it's clever it's genie but it's really and then say it again like say it it's clever well and so

[00:44:11]
I'm sure we'll address some of the listener responses but like we had a listener write in uh

[00:44:15]
and the name is totally escaping me but I will read the entire message once we do our side up

[00:44:21]
but we had listener response write in and ask about sort of what some of the biblical imagery

[00:44:26]
that's going to happen a little bit later so between this Paradise Lost kind of like Milton

[00:44:30]
reference and then like the biblical kind of imagery later on um I think my take is just sort

[00:44:38]
of like this shit sounded and looked cool I don't really know if there's like any sort of greater

[00:44:44]
symbolism kind of woven throughout the game I think it's one of those things where like almost

[00:44:49]
like westerners are like oh check out this cool kanji tattoo I got it's like I feel like Japanese

[00:44:55]
game devs are like check out these cool western religious imagery symbols and it's a picture of

[00:45:00]
batman that would be that would be amazing I would kill for that um but yeah so it's kind of confusing

[00:45:09]
because we hear about the Paradise Lost Army's big mama is hiding big boss and big mama has big

[00:45:16]
boss and we've got to go to big mama to talk to big boss um and then all this like I'm sure snake's

[00:45:21]
just like why am I not big snake um but yeah so um small snakes aside snake has to lie about his

[00:45:32]
identity getting into the country um which uh the camera throughout these cut scenes is just like

[00:45:37]
intentionally obscuring snakes face um for a reason that I really dug when it happens um and uh

[00:45:45]
essentially he has to uh get through this like PMC security checkpoint and for obvious reasons is

[00:45:52]
afraid to walk through the sort of like the weird metal detector that scans your bones or whatever

[00:45:58]
the hell they have set up um these PMC boys are very beefy I also noticed compared to the other

[00:46:06]
PMC boys that we've dealt with these guys all look like Gears of Warmen like they look like they just

[00:46:11]
are made out of meat for Ravensall's one of the uh the US ones aren't they and they're all like you

[00:46:16]
know what I think of a US Marine I think of a beefy boy just just just a chef boy already when I

[00:46:22]
think of the US Marine and I don't know why just a just a thick meat boy just a super meat boy oh my

[00:46:32]
but yeah so this is very strange kind of like push and pull situation where like clearly the

[00:46:38]
character that is meant to be snake uh again we've not seen his face um but the character that is

[00:46:43]
meant to be snake is like he's next in line for the x-ray and they're like come on through and he's

[00:46:48]
just like not doing anything and they're like are you stupid and he still doesn't do anything then he

[00:46:54]
tries to light a cigarette indoors and people aim guns at his face um and then Meryl's like no the

[00:47:02]
mute cigarette weirdo is friends with me let him come on through and then they're like okay

[00:47:09]
um and so Meryl kind of comes to the rescue yeah I don't put on a mask and then

[00:47:16]
is that because he wasn't listening to the briefing and we were playing with the robot

[00:47:21]
you know what we're doing right snake yeah even during the briefing though they're just like yeah

[00:47:28]
like I think so it's Roy's voice Roy Campbell's voice is playing which Roy wasn't even there for

[00:47:32]
the briefing um but Roy's voice is playing through the cutscene um and it says like we've made

[00:47:40]
arrangements to get you through you know what to do but instead he just like awkwardly stands at

[00:47:47]
like the customs oh I can just see Roy just watching and going we set him a vent up there's a vent over

[00:47:52]
there we told him about the vent three times and he said yes the vent why is he not he just stood there

[00:47:57]
go through the vent dumbass he forgot um but yeah so then the camera pulls out once Meryl has kind

[00:48:06]
of pulled snake aside to reveal what's going on and it's pretty fucking cool so snake is wearing

[00:48:10]
the face camo that he got from laughing octopus to make his face look like young snake god snake

[00:48:17]
dumb dumb bastard he's already seen that face camo can be anyone so he chose me but

[00:48:24]
yeah yeah right let's take it back to the glory days yeah but yeah so you uh effectively from

[00:48:31]
this point in the game you unlock both non bandana young snake and bandana young snake but you can't

[00:48:37]
use the bandana version unless you are in like battle gear um so during this next portion of the

[00:48:43]
game you'll be in like civilian clothing to try and like sneak around um and blend in um but yeah

[00:48:50]
it's coat snake it's almost like it reminds me of zen zen agata the detective from lupin lupin the

[00:48:55]
third um it's like that outfit kind of like minus the hat like he just kind of has this like I don't

[00:49:02]
know it's like this weird it reminds me of like um I'm trying to think it reminds me of like fritz

[00:49:07]
langs m or like some of these like weird like 30s and 40s kind of like detective movies it kind of

[00:49:14]
has a tone to like the it's really um the environment seems very um muted if you will

[00:49:24]
you know what I mean kind of dark and just kind of washed out black white yeah and it's I guess it's

[00:49:31]
supposed to be raining but I've noticed that like I could only tell on my television whenever

[00:49:36]
you would look at a street light you could see like what look like some raindrops kind of falling

[00:49:42]
but it looked like this kind of weird like digital overlay rain yeah I thought the same thing I I

[00:49:47]
only noticed it when the camera was kind of close to someone's face and their face will start to

[00:49:50]
shimmer like why their face shimmering is that the octo come on oh no it's rain yeah it was very

[00:49:56]
strange so anyway um yeah and in the midst of all this maryl and snake are talking while the

[00:50:01]
PMCs are still kind of like freaked out by snake um and johnny sizaki from across the

[00:50:09]
courtyard is just like snake snake over here snake I swear to god what what are you doing like and

[00:50:16]
then even snakes like what's his problem um so it's super bizarre just the whole thing and

[00:50:21]
maryl's just like dumb fuck he's such a dumb fuck like guys now we're gonna try and sneak him through

[00:50:27]
right no one needs to know he's snake wave wave wave look at snake everyone yeah it's super bizarre

[00:50:35]
and I still don't understand why the things that happen to johnny happen to johnny but we it'll

[00:50:41]
happen it'll unfold like a train wreck in front of us soon um but yeah so this is where maryl name

[00:50:47]
drops as the president uh maryl's just like yeah I've been talking to the president um and snakes

[00:50:54]
tell me more and like that's like it's just like okay and they're talking about like snake wants to

[00:50:58]
do the old like i'm a renegade secret agent i'm gonna kill liquid because it's me doing right and

[00:51:06]
maryl's like wet work yeah and maryl's like no we have to do this by the book I told the president

[00:51:13]
he's gonna help us out and snakes like I don't want to talk to the president and like that's pretty

[00:51:19]
conversation um what time the president was my brother yeah it's yeah yeah right he was

[00:51:29]
but yeah so essentially it's just like this weird like how are we gonna defeat liquid and

[00:51:32]
then maryl gets like real personal about it which is like very upsetting to me um like so right before

[00:51:38]
then uh maryl's just like hey like the like your cause is our cause now like you don't have to do

[00:51:44]
this um and then snake chimes in with his like I'm no hero monologue that he just has written

[00:51:50]
like pre-written and just like busts out at any given moment um but uh maryl essentially just like

[00:51:57]
starts talking shit about his age and his like approach she's like get out of here old man you're

[00:52:04]
slowing everybody down and it's just like oh man like you don't have to do that like that's upsetting

[00:52:10]
so I think she even gets that it's upsetting because like as she turns to leave she just has this

[00:52:15]
like very I wonder if she told him that just to like keep him away I don't know the whole thing's

[00:52:21]
very somber it's sad but anyway maybe I'm the one who's reading too much into like old snakes plight

[00:52:28]
but I feel bad for the man um but yeah so then we're sort of approached with what we should

[00:52:34]
be doing which is Otacon hits us up over Kodak and says hey you gotta get to big mama and big

[00:52:39]
boss fast uh the PMCs have added like snakes new face to the blacklist so like be careful

[00:52:45]
streets are under curfew only resistance and PMC folks are out and about um and essentially says

[00:52:51]
like hey you have this like signal interceptor item that we're giving you which you can use to like

[00:52:57]
hijack the PMC's like data and like voice lines um and like Madnar is treating Raiden so everything's

[00:53:04]
okay and like be fine um and then we're just kind of like cut loose into this like European uh generic

[00:53:12]
European like stone street like I don't know like courtyard uh downtown area of just like generic

[00:53:22]
European major city um at dusk with the rain in our trench coat so I have a question to ask

[00:53:31]
of uh of Isaac particularly oh man um so so uh the outfit you're wearing

[00:53:41]
did you did you change it in any way honestly I haven't even gone into the

[00:53:48]
is it the camouflage menu that you do this all this in yeah I have yeah is that into your question

[00:53:56]
I have not Isaac's not press start this entire time wait there's a map

[00:54:03]
you guys have been saving your game I've been playing up until this point every week

[00:54:06]
I've just been stopping I did yeah standing still I didn't have that revelation once about saving

[00:54:12]
so yeah I I didn't uh when I first did this bit I didn't know you could just put on your camo

[00:54:20]
oh you change it back you can just take everything off yeah and then when I watched like you know

[00:54:24]
YouTube videos of people doing it they just immediately changed the octo camera like wait

[00:54:27]
you can just do that yeah because I've I've played this whole section as co-otacon oh that's awesome

[00:54:34]
because I didn't I didn't really it's just better the um the civilian clothing didn't really doesn't

[00:54:41]
really do anything it doesn't hide you from being seen or anything so I don't it doesn't it seems

[00:54:48]
kind of kind of pointless so I used a little bit of a trick here and uh I'm gonna go and tip my hat

[00:54:54]
to I think it was uh red stang on our slack channel uh Adam had mentioned that if you wear the

[00:55:00]
laughing octopus mask that like nobody gives a shit about anything so I literally just had like

[00:55:06]
the laughing octopus mask at all times and like all of the PMC's are just like oh hey what's up

[00:55:10]
what see yeah and I'm like okay so clearly a woman on a boy body

[00:55:19]
yeah this is fine like a a dead woman on a six foot four man one like man body didn't she have

[00:55:26]
tentacles why what's that like her mask if you like if you look at the way that snake looks when

[00:55:32]
he's wearing it it's clearly like a man's head wrapped with like black with like somebody having

[00:55:38]
like put like a model woman head on top of his head yeah it's like the color isn't it that goes up a

[00:55:45]
little bit yeah it's really weird looking oh I didn't know that huh yeah I just did that for safety

[00:55:52]
so like I still kept the civilian clothes on and I had the trunk pistol and I was just kind of like

[00:55:57]
tailing this like resistance member that we're gonna tail here in a little bit um and so I still

[00:56:02]
played everything sort of by the book but anytime I got lost and the PMC saw me they were just like

[00:56:06]
oh hey have a good night dang I was like all right that would make things so much easier what

[00:56:13]
yeah especially when the vehicle section comes up they just like drove by and were like

[00:56:18]
maybe that part how you doing have a great oh my god you need a ride and I'm just like all right

[00:56:23]
god damn oh I'm furious yeah it was crazy well I think you only get that octo camo from non-lethal

[00:56:33]
on laughing octopus so it is possible that you could be here without it oh I definitely don't

[00:56:38]
ever yeah okay fair enough so it's not that much of a face palm but no I had it I definitely had it

[00:56:46]
anyway yeah Isaac I'm curious so this is like one of the most like format breaking parts of the game

[00:56:53]
to some extent so like it's still stealth but like this doesn't this isn't necessarily like when I

[00:56:58]
think metal gear I don't think of like snake in a trench coat in the rain following a stranger yeah

[00:57:05]
whistling songs so this is like very not typical metal gear so like how did this I knew this was

[00:57:11]
coming and I've played this part before so I kind of was like prepped for it but like how did you

[00:57:15]
handle this situation um I kind of liked it at first because it broke up it changed it changed

[00:57:25]
the way that it played the first two acts and this one was just like hey you're gonna be just

[00:57:32]
sneaking around trying to find somebody to follow so I thought that was really cool like a cool

[00:57:40]
a really cool concept but I just didn't execute it very well and I got pretty frustrated with it

[00:57:50]
towards the end but it was it was really cool I liked it the laughing octopus trick would have

[00:57:58]
helped me a lot with my sanity but um it was the laughing a lessy at this play through because I

[00:58:07]
was laughing all the time and I think something's wrong with my tv because when I first started

[00:58:11]
I was it was it was almost completely black pitch black it's like is it supposed to be that dark

[00:58:20]
I don't think it was that dark for me really that dark for you patty no it was kind of like a yellowy

[00:58:24]
dark day of sex kind of dark yeah it almost looked like somebody just like had been smoking on my tv

[00:58:30]
like 10 years and there was just like a yellow like funk to it so what happened is snake had

[00:58:35]
installed the game uh and smoked all over your tv while he did it that's what happened there we go

[00:58:42]
yeah yeah it almost had like again going back to it was like a weird near automata like glaze

[00:58:46]
to it I'm just gonna mention that game all the time humanly can you should buy that game if you're

[00:58:52]
listening to this episode anyway continue I I promise they're not paying me yeah so um this okay

[00:59:00]
for the first two acts I felt like there was a really clear direction on here's a little target

[00:59:06]
and he go to this target um and this one was kind of more uh ambiguous on what to do um

[00:59:18]
and at first I was kind of lost like I don't really understand what I'm supposed to be doing

[00:59:23]
and and then Autocon's like dude come on man just equip this the interceptor and hurry up

[00:59:32]
and so yeah it's like hurry up and do what like I was confused too because I feel like they don't

[00:59:37]
do a very good job of like well I'm like I'm not I don't need games to hold my hand but like at

[00:59:44]
least tell me like like I get like big bosses bodies in Europe yes I'm in Europe got it it's a curfew

[00:59:54]
should only be PMC's and uh no one else should be out who is this guy that is out now but like

[01:00:01]
there's not really any like so patty I want to ask you this question because you might know

[01:00:06]
more than I because I've only played MGS for once before this time um can you just go to where the

[01:00:12]
body is without having to follow this guy I don't think you can so can you get to like the end of

[01:00:18]
the the bit and just walk out the front door I don't think you can because you need the

[01:00:24]
resistant member there to open the door initially so you can sneak in and be the cool guy later

[01:00:30]
I've because I've tried that I've tried kind of just running away from the resistance member in

[01:00:33]
the past and it's like hey snake you lost him you dumbass follow that boy gotcha follow the man

[01:00:42]
who's inexplicably whistling the same song as Sonny the whole time which I thought was very strange

[01:00:47]
yeah but yeah he just really likes the periodic table yeah but like so nobody tells you like

[01:00:53]
I mean Otacon's like hey maybe you should follow that guy but nobody is like yeah that guy's gonna

[01:00:59]
tell you exactly where to go so you should just like stick to him completely like it's kind of

[01:01:03]
just like and you can go anywhere because at one point I got lost and went to like two or three

[01:01:10]
different screens that when I finally reset and started over I never went to those zones once I

[01:01:16]
followed the guy yeah I think the path the path do change like I think depending on what difficulty

[01:01:21]
you do there's more guys I think the path double back a bit more and they swap around a bit more

[01:01:26]
so I think you see more of it the higher up the difficulty bar you go I think

[01:01:29]
yeah that sounds about right that's pretty much what I was seeing kind of across the board too but

[01:01:33]
yeah it's a very big map yeah I got lost yeah huge did you have fun in the park the park is my

[01:01:41]
favorite bit in the first bit um the guy says it does it like because my guy peed did your guy pee

[01:01:46]
yeah my guy uh so I was like behind the little hedge maze and then he's like walking and then

[01:01:52]
all of a sudden he just like stops and then turns around really quickly and starts running and I was

[01:01:57]
like oh fuck what's going on so I just like immediately like ran back and tried to find

[01:02:01]
somewhere to hide and then he just like pulls his dick out and starts peeing on a statue and I was

[01:02:06]
like I what it was very I must have gone and done a different thing or something because I don't remember

[01:02:12]
any of that yeah it's quite early on it's in the first chunk of it um in that bit I uh I kind of

[01:02:19]
followed him and was kind of sneaking around the outside after he did his pee bit I thought I can

[01:02:23]
take these two dudes out and let him through and I kind of he got a little bit alerted that something

[01:02:27]
was going on when the two guys just sort of fell asleep in front of him so he ran away

[01:02:32]
exactly in the direction I was laying on the floor oh no and got like a meter away before he even saw

[01:02:37]
me and again this is wearing the coat still like I insist on wearing the coat now because it's more

[01:02:41]
fun to be coat dude can you wear the coat for the entire game because I think I'm going to try to

[01:02:46]
do that maybe that'd be this is going to be the coat run the coat run the coat run um and yeah he

[01:02:54]
runs up and he looks at you and goes hey who's that and he kicks you in the head and runs away

[01:03:00]
who are you what a jerk dude I helped you those guys fell asleep because of me I'm your magical

[01:03:06]
fairy yeah that's super weird because I feel I felt like I was like I felt like this was like a

[01:03:11]
weird slapstick comedy like uh I don't know to me it felt like a weird like 90s like

[01:03:19]
bizarro comedy movie like weekend at bernie's or something silly because everywhere this guy would

[01:03:24]
go everyone around him would just pass out and he'd be like what cool I guess and then just like

[01:03:30]
keep walking because at one point he's like surrounded by four or five people and maybe

[01:03:34]
that's later on but I literally like they all fell asleep all around him and he was just like

[01:03:38]
all right cool and just like booked it and so I don't it was very bizarre the whole thing felt

[01:03:43]
very strange it's like a surreal a surreal like who got their metal gear in my european street

[01:03:49]
simulator like what's happening yeah well maybe he just felt super confident uh you know walking

[01:03:55]
around and people are passing out around him he's like am I x-men I'm either extremely attractive

[01:04:03]
or x-men or the nap something has happened yeah the sleep the sleep the sleep the sleep

[01:04:11]
the 15th member of the copers so I thought yeah I think I um I think I just took too long

[01:04:19]
to get rolling because I don't remember a park at all oh wow the park's pretty cool like it kind

[01:04:28]
for whatever reason remind me of like golden eye 007 the park did I don't know why did either of you

[01:04:34]
could you guys get the uh the secret fun thing you can do early on um if you okay so if you're

[01:04:42]
sneaking through uh you can kind of hear other stuff and you can hear occasionally you'll hear a

[01:04:47]
very quiet sort of footstep sound but doesn't sound quite normal uh and if you it only works in

[01:04:54]
certain places and you've got to nail it in one shot or you'll never get a chance to do it again

[01:04:57]
if you spin the camera around at certain points you can see a very strangely shaped person in a

[01:05:02]
trenchcoat following you and if you see them they see you and they scuttle away

[01:05:09]
that's very creepy and bizarre interesting yeah and then you'll see them late yeah you'll see them later

[01:05:16]
okay that's yeah weird later on through we'll come back to it but yeah you can see like a weird

[01:05:22]
spindly trenchcoat thing following you and then it vanishes huh that is very unnerving it's it's

[01:05:29]
the literal definition of three children in a coat like it is that oh you know what that's wonderful

[01:05:35]
I do remember some all right this is later on like in uh under the one of the bridges um I was

[01:05:42]
following in trench coats go frequently yes exactly I was following the guy and ahead of me there was

[01:05:50]
another another guy poking his head out but every time I would turn to look at him he would pop

[01:05:58]
and hide or whatever yep you found him that's very oh I was like man this is weird I don't know if

[01:06:05]
oh my gosh okay and I only found this on like my my walk through you know second or third run

[01:06:10]
trying to find the cool weird stuff yeah um I didn't notice this on my first run at all I heard

[01:06:15]
noises but I never knew what they were um it's really cool like ah there's a dude following me

[01:06:21]
yeah that's oh my god I feel like I like your coat yeah I want that coat um that's a coat dude big fan

[01:06:35]
is it still open can I go there now um that's so yeah there's like matching hats there's like signs

[01:06:41]
for shops that just say dolls like I just I don't like there's no utility to this weird European

[01:06:47]
like hellscape kind of like it's almost like it's like if somebody went to Europe had a fever

[01:06:52]
and then came back to the United States and recovered three months later and then told somebody

[01:06:56]
like the fever dream version of their like night stroll through like rainy european city yeah uh

[01:07:04]
it's very sure it does feel like a fever dream creepy yes um once we get past this uh park area

[01:07:10]
we're in the sort of like midtown sort of northeastern sector a helicopter shows up um with a search

[01:07:16]
light um which didn't really did you guys have any trouble with this like I didn't really I didn't

[01:07:22]
even notice anything with this really no piece of this piece office it was stupid I don't know my guy

[01:07:28]
kept on like I I I drank all the all the guards then my guy would just like walk right under the spotlight

[01:07:35]
and then get seen I was like dude come on I need to go towards the light and so other guards would

[01:07:42]
come come by and then I'd have to trank them because they would take the guy away and blah blah

[01:07:47]
blah and yeah this is the part where it kind of frustrated me because I was like dude just avoid

[01:07:52]
the spotlight or no but he would like is there any way to trank the resistance member carry him to

[01:07:59]
the door he needs to be at and then just wait for him to I tried that I don't think that works I think

[01:08:05]
he'll then just run away yes when he wakes back up oh no he runs all the way back all the way back I

[01:08:10]
think he does yeah I think if you're not careful about if you're not careful about which um which

[01:08:15]
PMC you should trank like they'll just go and wake each other up mm-hmm oh yeah yeah that happened to

[01:08:20]
me with the vehicle section coming up to which point I I got uh I got quite twitchy because I

[01:08:24]
didn't really want to be seen I wasn't doing a perfect run but I was like oh I don't really want to be

[01:08:28]
seen so I drank them get so far through the level the guy would kind of get stuck waiting for two more

[01:08:33]
guys and I think I'm gonna be careful here and I turn around walk back and shoot them in the goddamn

[01:08:38]
head while they're on the floor just to be safe just to be safe you know um I'll just I'll just pull

[01:08:44]
out my uh M1911 and it's pop pop pop right okay they're not gonna follow me again oh no that's

[01:08:50]
hilarious they're never gonna wake up yeah you trank them first so they go down and then you kill

[01:08:54]
them while they can't defend themselves it's perfect Otacon's rough it's the uh it's also known as the

[01:08:59]
Bill Cosby strategy oh yikes yeah oh that's some lemon juice

[01:09:13]
anyway uh so we show up to this sort of like midtown northern sector after that after the helicopter

[01:09:18]
bit um and this was very bizarre to me because I followed the resistance member into this like

[01:09:24]
backyard of like an apartment building and then like the moment you run in he just like gets

[01:09:29]
magically dressed in a different outfit and then you like I had to run back out very quickly

[01:09:34]
because I was like oh shit who is this and it's just like a PMC outfit with a bicycle

[01:09:42]
it was very the first so the first time I on the bike helmet the first time I got to this point

[01:09:47]
I I just thought it was another uh PMC so I just shot him oh and I was like all right and so I ran

[01:09:55]
around this area and I was like I don't know what's wrong with your hat yeah this uh shamefully

[01:10:03]
shamefully this took me a long time to figure out um to follow this guy I'm not gonna shame you I said

[01:10:10]
for that did you hear him whistling do it did you hear him whistle oh we'll see I when he when the

[01:10:20]
first when the actual resistance or the resistance guy in the civilian clothing went into the building

[01:10:25]
I heard him whistle and this guy came out I thought it was two separate guys and I thought the guy

[01:10:31]
was still whistling in there I was like all right man I'll help you out with this guy I'll

[01:10:38]
yeah the PMC is like I gotta stop the whistling where's that whistling coming from yeah it was if

[01:10:42]
you put on your like if you wear your solid eye which I always do um it actually marks him with

[01:10:47]
like a blue name rather than a red name that's another little tail like oh yep he's a cool guy

[01:10:52]
that's fine oh yeah this guy is this guy is fine see I didn't I didn't realize that yeah

[01:10:58]
that's crazy uh shortly after this so this is the part where like the four kind of guard thing

[01:11:02]
happens um so what's weird to me is the PMCs aren't weirded out by this man with the bicycle helmet

[01:11:09]
at all like he kind of blends in really well with them um someone said that like a whole platoon of

[01:11:15]
PMC guys like squat up around him at a specific point again it's like you're coming around a corner

[01:11:21]
and you're like running to keep up and you like hang left and then as you come around the corner

[01:11:25]
it's like there's just like four or five PMCs with our guy in the middle and it was just like oh

[01:11:32]
shit what's going on so I just like maybe maybe it's a really good disguise maybe their commander

[01:11:37]
wears a bicycle helmet but right right end of this thing you know like it's yeah we don't we don't

[01:11:42]
live in this country we don't see the day to day like he maybe he's been studying the upper echelon

[01:11:48]
of the yeah he's watched the uh kernel um I was gonna say Campbell then maybe it is not

[01:11:55]
watch possibly it's Matt Campbell it's Matt Campbell

[01:12:04]
god I just want Matt Campbell to come back in a big bad way yes please here's the thing so while I

[01:12:09]
was playing to catch up with this this is a slight aside uh I played through Metal Gear 3 again on the

[01:12:13]
Vita uh there is a Matt Campbell in the credits huh I shit you not there is a Matt Campbell in the

[01:12:20]
credits on Metal Gear 3 on the Vita as in like that's the guy's name or is it like it's like a

[01:12:24]
character credit no it's it's a credit for a guy that worked on the game in the oh my god yeah it's

[01:12:31]
in the blue point um uh port guy bit but I saw it I went the real Matt Campbell has appeared

[01:12:39]
that's awesome that's that's phenomenal I like thank you for the quickest I you're on the floor

[01:12:45]
I was like oh please let them have seen that we have not seen that that's that's wonderful um

[01:12:52]
but yeah so uh right around this time as well once we have gotten sort of rid of the bigger

[01:12:58]
squad of the PMCs that show up Otacon kind of hops on the horn to let us know that like oh no

[01:13:02]
they're starting vehicle patrols now and for me where I've like literally put everyone to sleep

[01:13:07]
everywhere that I go at all times um like an awkward squeaky like Mr. Sandman or something uh

[01:13:16]
essentially whenever Otacon came on the radio and told me this like I hear this truck driving by

[01:13:22]
I didn't see it but then I just hear like a huh huh and I hear somebody go like oh get up and they

[01:13:27]
just like keep honking and then I realized that the truck has like found the pile of sleeping guards

[01:13:34]
and it's like waking them all up one by one with the horn so I had to hear this fucking horn thing

[01:13:39]
like four or five times there's no time to kind of pick them all up and hide all the bodies is that

[01:13:44]
you just pop them and leave them right yeah in the middle of the road yeah which is quite stupid

[01:13:51]
when you think about it yeah just these sleeping men in a pile in the middle of the street yeah

[01:13:57]
so I managed to avoid the car for most of it and got seen by it at the very last corner

[01:14:03]
oh no but it was okay because the resistor the resistance member had gone far enough that it

[01:14:09]
didn't matter okay it just kind of dealer just van the guys were coming around the corner to shoot

[01:14:14]
me and then the kind of game faded down to the next cut scene I was like thank god I'm not doing that again

[01:14:22]
that's awesome Isaac did you uh did you get spotted by the by the by the patrol I can't tell

[01:14:28]
you how many times I got spotted died combination of both this truck was uh this truck was much like

[01:14:37]
the inmates in Dead Rising that are driving around in the little courtyard it's in the same vehicle

[01:14:43]
it's like they own it's almost like they kept uh they picked up the speed the longer it took

[01:14:51]
because I would the first round it took them a little bit to get come back all the way around

[01:14:56]
and then it just seemed like they would constantly be coming coming around and um I had to quickly hide

[01:15:04]
do you think they were doing time trials that's what it felt like the the resistance guy was

[01:15:11]
walking so slow I was like pick up just go um so it was quite frustrating for me

[01:15:19]
yeah that's very weird because I again yeah I when they passed the first time I was like oh it'll

[01:15:25]
probably I'll probably just have to deal with it once yeah um but then I want to say they

[01:15:28]
circled the block like four or five times by the time I got to the end and I was like what the

[01:15:33]
hell are you guys doing uh yeah so that was fun well thankfully this is uh this is sort of

[01:15:40]
the home stretch as well because right after this uh the uh resistance member just like

[01:15:46]
throws his PMC close in like an alley and just kind of like gets back to business um and there's

[01:15:52]
this sort of part where there's like a stairwell going up sort of just like I don't know elevated

[01:15:57]
kind of like entryway into a building and then just below there's two PMC so I just like

[01:16:01]
drank them immediately and then just kind of like kept a distance and then like right after this is

[01:16:06]
sort of this cutscene um with the resistance member do you guys have any closing thoughts on the the

[01:16:14]
this isolated weird portion of the game that kind of never comes back I wanted to do more of it I

[01:16:20]
really enjoyed it like I think I think it's probably about as long as it needed to be I think any

[01:16:24]
longer and it might have outstayed it's welcome but I wouldn't have minded doing some more of it

[01:16:29]
after a break I think they got a lot of ideas out like okay we're gonna do a tailing section

[01:16:33]
there's gonna be a bit where he doubles back he's gonna have a pee there's gonna be a bit where he

[01:16:37]
dresses up in skies there's gonna be cars there's gonna be hell like they thought of every idea

[01:16:41]
they did every idea they could think of and then they stopped yeah I think actually that's pretty good

[01:16:45]
yeah yeah I will say I never got boring every every corner was new like oh what's this one that

[01:16:50]
what's gonna happen on this corner what's gonna happen on this part if I was I was waiting for

[01:16:55]
the weird obligatory scene where it's like you follow him up the stairs into an apartment building

[01:17:00]
and then as you get to the landing a door closes but you don't see which one and then you're just

[01:17:04]
in a hallway filled with like I was waiting for like some awful see go it's like that and then I was

[01:17:10]
like oh thank you god for not doing this to me yeah I would have liked to if resistance

[01:17:16]
resistance Phil had gotten into a box maybe that would have been fun oh that would have been great

[01:17:21]
actually the hunted becomes the hunter yeah that would have been wonderful snake just goes past

[01:17:26]
the box and it's like where are you going snake and you're like what and you turn around and like

[01:17:30]
there's just this box it's just a box just a box

[01:17:41]
I think all right so if I played this again I think I would enjoy it more knowing what to do

[01:17:46]
because I was just running around not knowing where to go um dying left and right if I got that

[01:17:55]
the laughing octopus camo would be so much more enjoyable um I think it is actually easier if you

[01:18:03]
do put your octo camo back on and just like blend into everything like no one can see yeah like

[01:18:08]
it's way it is simpler but it is more fun in a coat that's a good point everything's more fun

[01:18:13]
in a game even that cool hands-in-pockets walk like yep yep into it yeah that's a good point yep

[01:18:19]
I would I would dare somebody to tell me something that isn't as fun in a coat with your hands in

[01:18:27]
your pockets like that because I can't think of anything I've noticed a lot of the games I like

[01:18:31]
seem to feature coats quite heavily like Bloodborne has a lot of really good coats in it Bloodborne

[01:18:36]
has a fantastic coat actually Red Dead Redemption that's got a couple of good coats for some good

[01:18:40]
coats in that game yep quite good yeah I feel like the number of coats is like uh it's uh

[01:18:46]
it's uh it immediately mirrors to like the quality of the game yeah like Dark Souls 3 basically no

[01:18:52]
coats yeah Dark Souls 3 no zero coats out of code

[01:18:59]
is that the rating we give in this game so how many coats does this game get

[01:19:05]
we're not finished with it yet so we don't know good point yes good point

[01:19:10]
okay fair enough currently currently has one coat actually it's got two coats if you count the

[01:19:14]
strange uh the strange uh stranger rascals situation that's happening but I do like

[01:19:21]
Otacon's coat at the start that white one that's a good coat oh that is a great coat but it's a

[01:19:24]
lab coat are we counting lab coats or is this just no that's like a leather overcoat that's like a

[01:19:28]
coat oh that's true that's a sick ass coat so uh oh no there's loads of coats riding has a coat

[01:19:34]
that's loads of loads of coats of coats like a cool kind of like church guy coat yeah vamp's got

[01:19:41]
like a I could be a preacher coat oh man which is cool because didn't he burn down a church or

[01:19:46]
something that's not cool I'm sure I'm sure you wait a minute I think an actual Dracula did I don't

[01:19:51]
know if vamp did some metal gear 3 is currently on a perfect coat man yeah loads of coats let's see

[01:19:58]
how this goes yeah let's see how the rest well there's there's actually a pretty kick-ass coat

[01:20:02]
coming up here in a second with quite a cool texture if I do say so uh so uh Snake super

[01:20:10]
sneaks the fuck up on this resistance member in like this okay for every moment in the history of

[01:20:15]
metal gear where Snake has been in a very awful hiding place during a cutscene this completely

[01:20:21]
rectified that because the resistance member like looks over his shoulder Snake just he's he's like

[01:20:26]
right behind there and as the guy turned he just like vanished um and then when the guy turns back

[01:20:31]
around snakes like right there and it blew my mind I was like very good work like kudos to you you

[01:20:37]
deserve this um except for in mind where he had the creepy fucking laughing octopus still on and I was

[01:20:42]
like I don't like that face that's very creepy please don't sneak up on people like that um

[01:20:48]
but um essentially he like almost like MGS3 style like grabs the dude like does some like

[01:20:56]
weird body contortion shit pushes him in the door steals everybody's guns beats everybody up chokes

[01:21:01]
a grown man with his knees all that craziness um just makes all these like really cool yeah it's

[01:21:09]
pretty neat he just like flows like water through like a room full full of men with guns thing is

[01:21:15]
those guys they could have just shot him once easily just stay back like yeah and shoot him just

[01:21:20]
just once in the shoulder there we go done um do you know there's a cool uh there's a cool l1

[01:21:27]
moment in this bit as well oh yeah yeah like in the midst of the cqc where you can like look

[01:21:32]
between the guards yeah and you can see the posters on the wall oh I didn't look at the poster what

[01:21:36]
were they oh okay so as you're cqc'ing you can do it you can kind of look straight ahead and if you

[01:21:41]
turn to the left and right there's like two on each wall uh posters uh one of them is metal gear one

[01:21:47]
themed oh cool one is metal gear two things and then there's two for metal gear three and they're

[01:21:52]
kind of like full cast uh you know all the robots are on there all of the people are on there like

[01:21:57]
you know they're big arty you know the sort of poster you'd have spread up on a wall by itself

[01:22:01]
like they're awesome that's super great what the fuck are the resistance members doing with

[01:22:06]
they're big fans no idea like it's in it's in universe that's the thing that nobody's told us

[01:22:13]
this whole time people have been making games about snakes exploits during these games um but

[01:22:19]
yeah so and then all of the body on all of the hair on my body completely stands up at this moment

[01:22:25]
every fucking time but we get introduced to big mama in this gigantic cathedral yeah um and I

[01:22:32]
have a question so this is going to be answered before the end of this podcast but I want to

[01:22:36]
ask right now Isaac did you realize who big mama was the moment you saw her yes I did

[01:22:42]
actually okay cool because like the moment I saw her I was just like oh this is this just got real

[01:22:49]
good yeah I was like oh man you're a little old but still would whoa I'm just kidding

[01:22:59]
but she's got quite a good coat on as well yes she does that's a good good coat yes but it's uh so

[01:23:06]
big mama is Eva um and it's just I will say that so in my hype for Metal Gear Solid 4 when this came

[01:23:13]
out um I absolutely like the least my least expected character to return was probably like next to Eva

[01:23:22]
was like Vulcan and Boss right like I was just like there's no way that they're gonna like bring

[01:23:27]
these people back um and so like this whole cut scene just being like oh no Eva's back and everyone

[01:23:34]
you used to be friends with is actually a bastard I was like this is amazing like I really enjoyed

[01:23:40]
this like pivot that happened oh this is great because it's like I hope you're ready for some

[01:23:45]
exposition because holy shit get ready um and as I was writing notes for this bit I'm literally

[01:23:52]
sitting there with a pen in my hand scribbling because I didn't know you could pause the damn thing

[01:23:56]
so I'm just like just like liquid oscelot zero something Patriots

[01:24:03]
MGS 3 boy what does that mean

[01:24:08]
hey I'm a real MGS 3 boy I'll take that oh yeah yeah there's actually a save point in the midst of

[01:24:14]
the exposition like there's so much exposition that they're like hey do you want to save real quick

[01:24:18]
like you want to go get something to eat like we understand um so no it's pretty great and so uh

[01:24:24]
we're gonna camp out here because like we're gonna honestly we're gonna wrap up this first part of

[01:24:29]
act three just talking about the bombs that go off during this cut scene um and uh and we're gonna

[01:24:36]
play up until that sort of save point before it kind of shifts back in do you have like a bomb sound

[01:24:41]
effect sure I can I can have one oh so mom number one uh we find out that Eva is snake's mom uh

[01:24:53]
like literally snake's mother is Eva uh she's surrogate she's the surrogate mom for the

[01:24:58]
leson fanta riba project she straight up called snake david in like this real bossy like david

[01:25:04]
and I was just like oh shit like mom's here yeah like she said that she was the mother for the

[01:25:12]
leson fanta riba product but only mentioned solid and liquid where it's solidest come from

[01:25:16]
yeah well and so that's the thing too is like I because I actually had that sort of in my notes

[01:25:21]
initially as well um I would be curious to kind of deep dive but like it's almost like solid and

[01:25:25]
liquid didn't even fucking know about solidest at all because like if I remember correctly even in

[01:25:31]
mgs2 they're like wait what so I don't know if he was like a secret a secret snake it's kind of

[01:25:39]
what I feel like right like just like I don't I feel like they talked about it tactical lesbian

[01:25:45]
baby

[01:25:49]
I love it oh man um I'm gonna go down real quick on a just to touch back on what we were talking

[01:25:54]
about with the biblical stuff um so it's a real like so okay let's think for a second so Adam or

[01:26:01]
oscelot or Adam ska uh and Eva Adam and Eve uh there's this like biblical imagery where randomly

[01:26:08]
in the middle of the cut scene like an apple rolled out of a dude's jacket oh my god down the middle

[01:26:13]
of the cathedral steps and it felt so like as that apple hit the ground it's just like somebody

[01:26:17]
threw like a piece of ham on the ground and I was just like this is the most ham fisted

[01:26:22]
fucking like what is going on um and then Eva picks up the apple and so it's like snake and

[01:26:28]
eve and an apple and she chooses not to take a bite and it's just like I don't why are you doing

[01:26:35]
this like why there's never been any religious imagery in any of these games I think she's just

[01:26:41]
got really terrible taste I think she's thought oh it's snake coming I've got a good idea for a bit

[01:26:46]
right watch this this is gonna be cool Jeff here put this apple in your jacket you're gonna want to

[01:26:52]
roll out and no one laughs oh yeah and she's just like ah fuck you've got your dad's sense of humor

[01:27:01]
but yeah so in my opinion it's literally just like it's just imagery for imagery sake like I really

[01:27:07]
don't think there's anything too elaborate here yeah yeah but Eva does mention like and I'm just

[01:27:13]
gonna go ahead and put this like right here right now and like this doesn't spoil anything for like

[01:27:17]
future games for you Isaac but like arguably this cutscene marks the shift where like the series

[01:27:24]
ceases to be about anything other than zero and big bosses like disagreement

[01:27:30]
mm it's like from this point until like the end of the franchise as we know it like everything

[01:27:38]
is going to be centered around big boss and zero and how they like are both in disagreements about

[01:27:47]
like what the boss actually wanted right and it's super cool like it's super like for me I just

[01:27:54]
remember like when that moment like I know a lot of people were just like what the fuck like uh

[01:27:58]
but for me it was like all this big bombastic crazy over the top insanity like espionage that

[01:28:05]
was happening throughout the all the other games it was so weird to then realize that like major

[01:28:10]
Tom from the fucking beginning of mgs3 is the big bad guy and that like him and big boss have

[01:28:18]
just been butting heads this whole time yeah I don't know it was just super cool for it to like

[01:28:23]
all of a sudden like instead of instead of doing the final fantasy thing where it starts out like

[01:28:28]
very grassroots and then becomes like oh space demons are the big boss um it almost did the

[01:28:34]
inversion where it was like oh crazy nuclear warfare like espionage like political climate and

[01:28:40]
then it was like actually two dudes that can't agree with each other it and it was weird it

[01:28:46]
flawed me like the first time I'm like during the floor like what is happening

[01:28:53]
everyone is connected to everything and like it's like a conspiracy theorist like wet dream

[01:28:59]
there's like a wall with red lines and there's lots of string and it's all connected and it's all right

[01:29:06]
yeah yeah it's like it's actually it's actually kajima's map yeah someone's just seeing them

[01:29:12]
after it right the next cutscene we're just going to explain this get the map get some paper this is

[01:29:16]
going to take some time we need a chart let's just throw a hundred truth bombs at you yeah it's pretty

[01:29:25]
great so kind of working down the line um essentially Eva kind of retells Operation

[01:29:31]
Snake here from her perspective which is pretty cool um and before that she had mentioned that

[01:29:36]
like zero founded the patriots during the cold war to kind of like make sure that like the American

[01:29:40]
state never sort of waned but what happened is like after the cold war the patriots as an

[01:29:46]
organization continued and once everyone died they were like replaced with AI which could continue

[01:29:53]
the plan forever but essentially in a nutshell Eva talks about how post mgs3 she had sort of

[01:30:02]
failed her mission and was cast out of china and she later met snake in hanoi i'm curious when she

[01:30:08]
says she failed her mission am i remembering correctly when it's because what she thought she

[01:30:13]
stole from snake wasn't the actual philosopher's legacy yeah didn't oscelot steal the actual one

[01:30:19]
and give it to zero is that correct i think that's about right yeah because they they mentioned that

[01:30:24]
in the i think it's the post credits thing oscelots like yep she had a fake okay yeah that's right

[01:30:29]
yeah because he's doing his weird like triple his triple stabbing or whatever is going on

[01:30:34]
so yeah yeah it was insane but yeah so those funds that were stolen by oscelot given to zero he

[01:30:42]
uses to form the patriots after mgs3 the patriots were used to kind of like the whole mo for the

[01:30:48]
patriots was like we are going to carry out the final will of the boss and their interpretation

[01:30:54]
of that final will is like unified sort of control mechanisms keeping everybody peaceful forever

[01:31:03]
and by i don't know it's so weird because like where they seem to disagree is that like big boss

[01:31:09]
saw the boss as like a fighter like a warrior and like the only place where the boss was truly

[01:31:14]
alive was like on the battlefield so big boss's interpretation of the boss's will seems to be like

[01:31:22]
constant fighting valhalla like fucking heaven or hell let's rock just like keeping keep the

[01:31:28]
party going forever and it seems like zero's interpretation of that will of big boss is will

[01:31:34]
of the boss is like peace and harmony even if it means like information control and like

[01:31:42]
manipulation of the public kind of so that's kind of the end like again that's sort of the

[01:31:49]
backdrop because then we're like we're told that the like the patriots were snake which big boss

[01:31:55]
zero uh sigint which we've discussed before that sigint uh i'm pretty sure we discussed it before

[01:32:04]
i'm always positive that we discussed it before that sigint is the darpa chief yeah i think it

[01:32:07]
had been hinted at like we all kind of had ideas but this is like i think the first time it was

[01:32:10]
confirmed sigin who became the darpa chief donald anderson like yeah this is the first like yeah

[01:32:17]
that's right yep and then paramedic who's actually dr clark um and dr clark if you pay attention

[01:32:24]
because nobody confirms if it's a man or a woman dr clark is the person who did the fucking

[01:32:28]
experiments to the cyborg ninja yep and randal is on fonterebla project as well yeah yeah which is

[01:32:34]
crazy um especially knowing that it's like goofy movie nerd godzilla buff paramedic like it's just

[01:32:41]
like what um and then even oscelot round off the team um and so zero's whole thing was like

[01:32:48]
every good ideology has to have a figurehead and since the boss is dead like who best to

[01:32:54]
elevate to that position uh than big boss and so zero was like big boss is going to be our like

[01:32:59]
our front man um and he uh zero intentionally sort of like amassed all these like false

[01:33:05]
tales of big boss and kind of spread them around which is super cool to me because like since we've

[01:33:11]
played as big boss before we know that he's not like robo mecha hitler like godzilla insane like

[01:33:19]
over the top powerful x-man right like he's just a guy um so it's super cool to like then hear

[01:33:26]
through eva that like zero essentially like spread a whole bunch of misinformation about this like

[01:33:32]
legendary soldier if maybe he like maybe he wasn't that legendary you know what i mean

[01:33:41]
but through that kind of uh through his false tales and his uh you know his

[01:33:45]
through his bullshit hey big boss is cool stuff like they've they've turned him into the messiah

[01:33:50]
they've turned him into the jesus figure for sure it's almost like the most interesting man in the

[01:33:54]
world i almost imagined just people being like hey did you hear that big boss like strangled three

[01:33:58]
alligators while driving a motorcycle through central central park like it's the new it's the

[01:34:04]
new chuck norris fast yeah exactly but it's big boss big boss eats cold and shits diamonds

[01:34:11]
um but essentially what we end up kind of being told is that zero was worried that big boss was

[01:34:15]
going to take off or die um and he he sensed tension because like very clearly big boss was

[01:34:21]
sick of kind of being manipulated into being kind of the poster child for this program um and so

[01:34:27]
that's where the cloning happened with the leasant fontor ebola project um where zero kind of like

[01:34:35]
lost his identity and friendship with big boss completely and kind of like cloned the man

[01:34:41]
without ever asking for permission um and so through dr clark and eva uh zero was able to

[01:34:48]
i think it was dr clark used big bosses dna and the eggs from her japanese assistant which is why

[01:34:57]
snake has eastern blood and it's like fucking q valkan rave and just being like blood of the east

[01:35:04]
flows through your veins like it's really good what the fuck really good um but yeah so essentially

[01:35:12]
dr clark used her assistant's eggs which is super weird like i can't imagine like my superior at work

[01:35:18]
being like hey lessee i'm gonna need to use your eggs is that all right and it's like i guess your

[01:35:23]
eggs um what yeah my my moist eggs um so she uh injects like big bosses dna into these eggs um and

[01:35:32]
then they take all of that and put it inside of eva um and then eva gives birth to liquid and solid

[01:35:39]
however again big boss did not fucking know this was happening um and eva decided to do it because

[01:35:45]
she loved big boss um even though big boss would never reciprocate which is really upsetting to hear

[01:35:53]
and essentially right after that big boss was like fuck this and left the united states and

[01:35:57]
created his own mercenary company and kind of drifted away um which we are going to be playing

[01:36:03]
all of that as the series continues um and uh big boss never wanted snake um but eva says that she

[01:36:10]
did um essentially after big boss leaves zero loses his fucking mind and just wants nothing but

[01:36:16]
rules and regulation and he creates this war economy and just kind of becomes this monster

[01:36:21]
that we know today um and then we kind of discovered that the patriots eventually have

[01:36:25]
so much influence and capital that they pretty much control the entire planet

[01:36:31]
and that's the story of metal gear you guys hey like you say i hope you like exposition because

[01:36:40]
and like the rate that you're saying this is the rate that they say it like it's just here's a thing

[01:36:45]
here's the thing dr clark is actually parametric sigin was donald anson uh zero big boss lezon

[01:36:50]
fontory but it's all linked and you're just sitting there going what yeah it's but i thought the

[01:36:56]
patriots were all 200 years old yeah and then the whole time too it's just like it like even the

[01:37:02]
graphics aren't necessarily like what you're seeing on the screen isn't anything other than like some

[01:37:06]
portraits of everybody's faces when they get mentioned and when they split like the pictures

[01:37:11]
just move away from each other like yeah it's good it's like somebody up there's got one of those

[01:37:18]
like sports commentator like pencils that they draw the little like yellow circles around the

[01:37:24]
soccer ball uh and like they're just like here over here yep and then we're gonna fly over here

[01:37:28]
and it's just like and then they split and there's like this jagged line between them and they're

[01:37:33]
like hooray it's yeah it's very bizarre but it is it's with uh uh uh i almost said shinji makami

[01:37:42]
holy shit what is the artist's name who does the killer metal gear artwork yo g shin kawa shin kawa

[01:37:49]
why the hell was i thinking macabre i'm sorry um because i'm a terrible person who confuses

[01:37:55]
similar names um they're not similar at all they're just japanese less you you're an asshole i'm sorry

[01:38:02]
would you like to say you dig faster yes yeah um

[01:38:13]
so that's everything so like i figured that we can kind of camp out here and kind of talk a little

[01:38:25]
bit about all this shit i've clearly just voiced that i think it's really neat um isak i honestly

[01:38:33]
other than like act four because i think act four is going to be the most fun thing to talk to you

[01:38:36]
about in this game um this was like this moment right here in this game is the reason why i was

[01:38:43]
like i should get isak to play all of these games in order so that he can get to this part um what

[01:38:49]
did you think about the everything that the overload of information yeah yeah what are you

[01:38:57]
um when did this i mean did you play it like before we recorded the podcast or like have you

[01:39:02]
digested it like a lot of it was i mean to be honest you guys had kind of filled me in on a lot of it

[01:39:10]
whether you spoiled it knowingly or not um so i mean a lot of it really blew me away but i sort

[01:39:20]
of had that um inkling like information in the back of my head from um talking to with the past

[01:39:27]
games with you guys um on mgm and whatnot you guys kind of threw out little tid bits of spoilers

[01:39:35]
here and there about bits of information but this kind of like globb did all together and i was like

[01:39:42]
oh my gosh and then i was like oh my gosh because it was a lot of information um and i'm not gonna

[01:39:56]
some of it didn't stick a lot of it was like because she like you guys said she kind of just

[01:40:00]
flies by and just throws information yeah i was like fucking pausing like every sense yeah and i

[01:40:06]
was like hold on hold on big mom i gotta write this down like i was like a court stenographer like i

[01:40:11]
was just like flying through these she just says it like you you know exactly you know everything

[01:40:18]
that she's saying and she's like and this is this and this is how it worked and then blah blah blah

[01:40:23]
and in between all of these snakes just going what like every like every two sentences he's like

[01:40:30]
he's just he's just playing with the mark too in the corner

[01:40:35]
well i'm trying to bump into your shin i wish you could do that in every cut scene just like press

[01:40:40]
like the button to activate the mark that'd be hilarious it's like sitting there with his little

[01:40:44]
ps3 controller going i can make you jump yeah snakes just like tell me which one to punch

[01:40:52]
that's all i care about what's going on but yeah it's super cool though like i liked all the artwork

[01:40:58]
and stuff there was one fun moment where she was like and that's where i met snake and snakes like

[01:41:03]
snake and she's like yeah your dad's codename was also snake naked snake and snakes like oh okay

[01:41:09]
like it was just like and then he gave you his codename and it was like okay cool it's one of

[01:41:14]
those things where like and this happens to me a lot with christen my wife where like she'll just

[01:41:18]
walk in on a specific moment of like a movie a show or a video game and be like what the fuck

[01:41:24]
are you watching um and just like think it's awful yeah because of like this one isolated scene

[01:41:29]
i feel like this scene right here quite possibly might be the most polarizing scene in the entire

[01:41:35]
franchise because when you watch this eva sequence you're either like completely drunk on nostalgia

[01:41:42]
and all of the hairs on your body are standing up or you don't know anything that this person's

[01:41:47]
talking about and you're like what the fuck is this this sounds awful i think if you're the

[01:41:52]
person that played this game first this bit is just an imblur blah blah blah yeah blah blah

[01:41:58]
and then the blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah exactly i thought this this

[01:42:04]
scene was really cool like um not um i was confused all the way up until this point yeah and not just

[01:42:15]
mgs4 i mean i was kind of confused on a lot of the storyline from mgs1 and just two mgs3

[01:42:22]
wait isak you were confused i would never have got that from the show oh thanks a lot he's actually

[01:42:29]
the most put together on the entire show is what you guys don't know he's a he's a character actor

[01:42:33]
and he's actually just been he's been acting this entire time yes yes this is yeah exactly thank you

[01:42:39]
bless you but yeah um but yeah so this it's really tied everything together for me and it makes

[01:42:48]
it's interesting to me how they've like shown every so in the timeline i feel like damn near

[01:42:53]
every year of this world has been fleshed out if not in front of us then at least discussed

[01:43:02]
i feel like if i were to like throw my hat in for like a like a weird like ground zeroes ask like

[01:43:08]
mini campaign for them to like make i feel like snake rescuing eva and hanoi and then bringing

[01:43:14]
her to join the patriots would be a really fucking cool thing to like see happen um and it's weird to

[01:43:21]
me like that the beginnings of the patriots is like this weird part of the history that never

[01:43:28]
actually gets shown to us ever because like by the time we're done with the entire series it's like we

[01:43:33]
see like 90 percent of big boss's life but it's super weird to me that like we don't see this like

[01:43:40]
very pivotal like window well i don't think there'd be much game there that's true yeah it would be

[01:43:47]
like a telltale presents the patriots yeah that'd be cool i'd be down with that metal

[01:43:54]
here the choices are you could you can you can choose like well what do we make everyone else say

[01:43:58]
and you can choose which vowel uh lalilulu like it's us the lulalulu lilulu that doesn't sound right

[01:44:07]
that'd be amazing like a puzzle game that's true but yeah and so yeah it's it's interesting um

[01:44:13]
i feel like between big boss like rescuing gray fox and big boss like rescuing uh

[01:44:19]
eva and like all these other characters it's like kind of cool to weave these like tall

[01:44:22]
tales about this like crazy man who's just like wandering the world you could even play the tall

[01:44:27]
tales that zero spread you know of that time big boss fought off an army of sharks that would be fun

[01:44:34]
to play that would be amazing they should just yeah they should just call them the the tall tales of

[01:44:39]
big bosses yeah the boss tales boss that that time big big boss took down all of australia yep the

[01:44:46]
australian big boss war i remember that yeah 2072 the snakes are bigger and dangerous uh

[01:44:54]
the dingos are all self-destructing it's crazy

[01:44:58]
the dingo hound oh no

[01:45:03]
but yeah so yeah i mean this is a stealth mission

[01:45:08]
patty uh how how uh how fast did you get whiplashed during this sequence the first time that you played

[01:45:14]
it many oh so first this is really cool because i i i it's been kind of cool hearing uh is it like

[01:45:20]
what you say about kind of following it and kind of actually getting this bit almost it sounds like

[01:45:26]
you get um because when i played this the first time you know i i consider myself a big fan of

[01:45:32]
the series but i didn't do like a run through of the series before playing this i just got metal

[01:45:36]
gear falls like right let's get it on now play the video game get it in me you know put put put the

[01:45:44]
no let's not dive algae into that insert directly into eyeball we're not talking about snakes at this

[01:45:50]
junk junk yeah um so i was i was really into like yes i can play it so i'm watching and then all

[01:45:56]
this stuff was kind of going bam bam bam and i'm just jaw on the damn floor because a lot of this

[01:46:00]
i hadn't made those connections you know i hadn't made the oh shit the patriots are snake and zero

[01:46:05]
and sigin and and what exactly you know and uh the dr clark stuff you know was like what hang on

[01:46:12]
oh i always thought dr clark was a man but just because we live in a weird male centric society

[01:46:20]
i guess and you just like every every character mgs one that has a character model besides sniper

[01:46:26]
wolf is and maryl is a dude so it's just like you just assume yeah exactly um and it's kind of cool

[01:46:33]
kind of hearing isaac so you get it because you've been playing these things and analyzing them

[01:46:38]
closely over the last year and a half you know you've had it in you it's similar to what i've

[01:46:42]
had personally with with here we go dark souls um yay two hours in and we got the reference in

[01:46:49]
i'd love to talk to you about how dark souls three has anything to do with anything because i cannot

[01:46:53]
my head around that but i can do it in different time i'm doing two words it doesn't um

[01:46:59]
no but yeah so when i when i played dark souls one for the first time uh with cj playing on the

[01:47:04]
very first three episodes of our show the first 20 episodes of me playing dark souls one for the

[01:47:08]
first time because we were talking about it because we were analyzing it i feel like i was getting it

[01:47:12]
faster than if i just played it on my own like the fact that you guys have been talking about it

[01:47:17]
and talking it through i think yeah like you say i think you've got a better ground for kind of just

[01:47:22]
getting this stuff because you've been delving it in detail and you've had that continued thing

[01:47:26]
yeah there's not been a five-year gap that's true between games we forgotten it all again you know

[01:47:31]
like if you'd have asked me during metal gear to like explain during metal gear four explain metal

[01:47:35]
gear two okay um there was a there was a there was a sweet boy and you ran around an oil rig and then

[01:47:44]
they hit manhattan and then computer stuff happened yeah and that's why i would have cried

[01:47:51]
on pride there was the best hug ever yeah there was like a predator level bro moment in that game

[01:48:01]
the best video game handshake ever oh i love it yeah of all time and the way they throw the hand

[01:48:06]
away and go for the hug and i'm like oh those dudes yeah that's that's bro goals like that's

[01:48:13]
that's a goal to be able to just just there's just like clock hands and just throw it away and just

[01:48:18]
go for the hug because you're secure in who you are exactly you know snake nose he slept with like

[01:48:24]
90% of the women on the planet but yeah because because of your close read like you you get it

[01:48:32]
plus my first run i didn't get it i was like i mean i was picking things up but they just throw

[01:48:36]
so much at you you by the time you finish you're like okay now what uh what whereas this time on

[01:48:44]
this run i it's amazing like it just like it starts flying out you're like yeah they laid the

[01:48:48]
groundwork for that um do i think they knew where this was going at the end of middle gear to

[01:48:52]
hell no yeah i don't agree either yeah why would they have done the 200 year old patriot's thing

[01:48:58]
fuck off yeah you did not plan that don't talk shit yeah i will say if anything i feel like at

[01:49:05]
least by the end of mgs3 they kind of knew what they were gonna do yeah i think they had that plan

[01:49:10]
they knew where they were gonna go uh i like you alluded to early you know it looked like metal gear

[01:49:15]
three was going to be the last one you know and it yeah and then it obviously wasn't but they kind

[01:49:20]
of laid some subtle groundwork hints in there that you could kind of see oh there's some links going

[01:49:25]
on there's some links and then this is obviously the game where they explore those links and really

[01:49:28]
i mean this metal gear four feels like right we are tying this thing off we're putting a bow on

[01:49:32]
this damn game and it's done we're gonna leave no stone unturned we're gonna talk about every

[01:49:36]
little thing that's happened and we're gonna tie sure big old bow and that's metal gear four and this

[01:49:40]
is my present to you yeah and i would say like realistically speaking like when mgs4 is done

[01:49:46]
you could probably quit playing metal gear games at that point and like have all the information

[01:49:52]
that you need speaking of information i'd like to know your your thoughts on this so now you've

[01:49:59]
played you know once you've played the games through you know obviously a lot of us played them in

[01:50:02]
release order yeah would you advocate someone playing in chronological order or not i so the

[01:50:09]
last time other than when we started the show like right around the time that we started the

[01:50:13]
show i actually finished playing the games in chronological order how does that feel because

[01:50:21]
i really enjoyed it but the whiplash of metal gear one and two happening like in the middle of that

[01:50:27]
is like very intense yeah see for me it was my my my sort of point on this is that i

[01:50:35]
well they say when you play in chronological you get the story in chronological order i don't

[01:50:39]
think that's necessarily true i think the way that the story has evolved from metal gear one

[01:50:44]
three two three three you know the way that these things have been drip fed i think to play metal

[01:50:49]
gear solid two after three after they've laid all that ground for the patreons and then go

[01:50:56]
yeah they're 200 years old yeah that stuff would just jar me you know yeah for sure well and it's

[01:51:02]
like the retcon of big boss being snakes dad which like did not happen until mgs one yeah totally

[01:51:08]
like when you yeah when you play metal gear metal gear two it's like there's no mention of that at all

[01:51:12]
and then suddenly like within the first three cut scenes of mgs one they're like your father big

[01:51:17]
boss and it's like what yeah so i've always been of the opinion that like for me that the proper

[01:51:24]
order to play them i always felt should be release order for sure personally yeah you may you may

[01:51:30]
disagree that that's fine but that's how i always yeah i feel like the show's kind of a testament

[01:51:34]
to that too though because like that's the approach that we've taken with the show and i feel like it's

[01:51:37]
lent itself to be easier to talk about yeah this way definitely so imagine trying to explain why

[01:51:44]
big boss is important first yeah right it's just like i don't yeah it'd be bizarre um but yeah like

[01:51:52]
i think for all intents and purposes like by the time the credits were all for mgs four like

[01:51:58]
really the other games in the series like peace walker and uh five and ground zeroes and and i

[01:52:05]
guess metal gear rising is the only thing that's kind of like after but it's kind of a spin off

[01:52:09]
um the core games in the franchise after four like are totally just there for like hey are you

[01:52:14]
curious about that big boss shit that everybody was talking about um that's pretty much it in my

[01:52:21]
opinion like i think uh i think peace walker and five do a good job of like adding more stuff to

[01:52:29]
the universe to make it fun and engaging and great to play um but i think for all intents and purposes

[01:52:35]
if you finished four and you were like okay i understand this entire story now thank you um

[01:52:42]
that would probably be totally fine as well you know what i mean um but you're missing out on

[01:52:46]
arguably i think some of the better games in the series because peace walker and five are pretty

[01:52:52]
um but yeah so i don't know five when i say great i'm gonna put that in quotes um mechanically it's

[01:52:59]
great but i'm ready to die on that hill you guys when we get to mgs five i feel like i'm gonna have

[01:53:04]
to be riding shooting at the metal gear rays from the end of mgs two um because so many people on

[01:53:09]
the internet want to like fight me about not liking metal gear solid five it's so weird like

[01:53:16]
like mechanically it's great but like story wise that game is fucking terrible but anyway i digress

[01:53:23]
had to get it in while i could take a jab you've got an entire season you've got an entire season

[01:53:28]
to talk about that so that's true that's yeah it's very true oh it's gonna be your dark souls three

[01:53:32]
season it's your dark souls three season uh well hopefully metal gear survive is our dark souls three

[01:53:38]
jeez oh i've just been sick in my mouth a bit you're reminding me to eat this oh

[01:53:45]
but yeah um i'm trying to suss out where in the fuck i was going with all of this conversation

[01:53:50]
and about this stuff you're lost but i will i will say this the rest of metal gear solid four is

[01:53:57]
pretty great um i think act four is great um the second half of act three is pretty great as well

[01:54:02]
um i don't know it's just good it'll be fun to see everything kind of come to

[01:54:07]
its logical conclusion yeah the end of metal gear solid four is i mean from this

[01:54:10]
everything from this point on the whole game really is hey do you like metal gear solid

[01:54:14]
so do we this is for you yeah pretty much yeah from this point yeah yeah from this point on it's

[01:54:20]
just like hey we heard you like metal gear so we put metal gear in your metal gear while you

[01:54:25]
metal gear like um but to quote an old meme uh yes anyway i think that's about it um

[01:54:37]
closing statements on what we've already played was that it was a lot um oh i do want to ask i

[01:54:42]
remember now so i've got a question for both of you guys before we wrap everything up and kind of do

[01:54:45]
our uh plugs um so we've had a couple fans in the past asked us to do like a full blown story

[01:54:52]
retrospective kind of episode i don't know if the games lend themselves well to that

[01:55:00]
like if we went through the plot beat by beat from like the beginning to the end

[01:55:07]
like what the like yeah that just feels like an awful thing to listen to yeah i mean this is i mean

[01:55:12]
kind of it is kind of what you're doing here though yeah it's like what the whole show is as

[01:55:18]
opposed to like trying to cram it in one episode fast forward through the game bits

[01:55:24]
yeah the game yeah i just don't listen to the cutscenes yeah yeah i just don't even know like

[01:55:28]
what how you would package an episode like that like where do we start how do we talk about it in

[01:55:33]
such a way that it's not just you listening to somebody droning on information like read a

[01:55:38]
fucking wikipedia article like come on get out so i don't know i don't know if that would be engaging

[01:55:46]
for a listener or not maybe we can find a way to make it fun to listen to but i just i don't know

[01:55:51]
there's so much going on that you can't really skim over yeah specific stuff this stuff was built up

[01:55:58]
and uh a sort of consciousness has kind of developed over the years yeah no i mean truthfully

[01:56:05]
under the under the white house i'm blown away that uh gw stands for george w bush actually um i'm

[01:56:12]
kind of blown away that uh i'm blown away that kojima was actually able to keep up with all

[01:56:17]
this nonsense and like granted some things got retconned and things have been changed and stuff

[01:56:21]
like that but like the fact that anybody was flying by the seat of their pants and doing this is

[01:56:26]
mind-blowing yeah and the fact there's no real white by the time we'll be finished there's i don't

[01:56:32]
think there's that many plot holes really by the time it's finished are there yeah they use like

[01:56:37]
every part of the animal in this meal that is prepared for us like every aspect has been like

[01:56:45]
salvaged and utilized in some way so yeah well unceremoniously that's been the episode when we

[01:56:54]
pick back up uh we will hopefully be having patty back um along with sam the best pod boy the best

[01:57:02]
pod boy i yeah i i really i really really want to because the next chunk contains sort of my

[01:57:08]
absolute favorite metal gear content i think ever yeah i think sam agrees with you on that as well

[01:57:13]
so we are trying to make sure that we can find a way to fit everybody in also it's been too long

[01:57:18]
now i think this is episode three without sam and holy shit does this feel very different without

[01:57:23]
i miss sam so yeah hashtag team sam um well cool so before i go through my crazy laundry list of

[01:57:31]
things to plug patty uh where can people find you on the internet uh they shouldn't uh i'm off the

[01:57:38]
grid yeah i'm i'm on plug man i'm out of i'm out of the system i've turned my nanomachines off

[01:57:46]
fuck us how are you how are you gonna get out of train stations now it's fine i'll i'll i'll just

[01:57:52]
poop it'll be fine you just awkwardly stand there with a cigarette yep and until someone comes to

[01:57:57]
help me because i wasn't paying attention um yeah so uh you can find me on the twitter uh it's at a

[01:58:05]
patty stardust um because hey look metal gear link i really like david bowie and i made that uh

[01:58:11]
username when i was really young and you know david bowie kind of is in metal gear mostly now so

[01:58:16]
awesome yeah that's true i did you at some point say actually it's not patty stardust can you just

[01:58:21]
call me patty zero oh christ oh i will now change a twitter name there we go can you imagine how

[01:58:34]
amazing it would be if he was still major tom like if they were like major tom uh they're just like

[01:58:39]
big bots from now and we're gonna refer to you as the action man um and now we've got major tom versus

[01:58:45]
the action man jeez like playing with the plastic toys oh no you're right speaking of toys uh so if

[01:58:53]
uh if that isn't enough uh you can also uh follow my podcast i make with my cohort cj uh we do the

[01:59:01]
twin humanities dark souls podcast where we kind of we used to play the games and kind of talk our

[01:59:05]
way through them uh now we talk more about the community and uh sort of things around the games

[01:59:10]
of dark souls 3 yeah because i just don't give a shit anymore man i just don't give a

[01:59:15]
shit and it sucks because i just i'm i'm trying to bring myself to talk about the ring city soon

[01:59:20]
and i just like oh it's fine it's all right i but yeah i'll go into detail soon uh we also do an

[01:59:27]
offshoot podcast uh it comes on the same feed called other humanities which is where we talk about

[01:59:31]
other stuff uh for me recently that's been a lot of jojo's bizarre adventure because that is my

[01:59:39]
god damn jam he's taken over my life this year um i can be continued music though am i right oh my

[01:59:45]
god do you know this week because of a psn he's to sell i now own the ps3 and ps4 jojo's bizarre

[01:59:51]
adventure fighting games oh that's awesome because it's like three one of them's three quid at the

[01:59:56]
minute i'm like well that's the requid well spent uh that's crazy that's less than lunch fine so i

[02:00:02]
don't have a ton of familiarity familiarity with jojo's but i do know somebody throws a steam

[02:00:07]
roller onto somebody and yells re at some point uh yeah that's uh rodo roller da okay uh and then he

[02:00:15]
shouts the voice actor for dio is the greatest it's incredible uh if you don't watch jojo watch

[02:00:23]
fucking watch jojo listen to one of our other humanities episodes where i tell you to watch

[02:00:27]
jojo basically i'll just do that for an hour um it's on crunchy it's incredible like it's like

[02:00:32]
nothing you've seen it's brilliant um we also occasionally did a show for six episodes it's

[02:00:37]
more of an every now and again uh called twin destiny where we liked we talked about destiny

[02:00:41]
when it came out and we kind of popped back every now and again and it was a fun show you know we

[02:00:45]
we did the raid the very first raid for the first time the vault of glass and had the entire team on

[02:00:50]
that's awesome which was really really good uh we went in as acquaintances we came out as a squad

[02:00:57]
and you can also find me on the youtube uh again that's on twin humanities pod on youtube

[02:01:02]
and we put all our podcasts up there in youtube form as well if you'd rather listen to it there

[02:01:06]
and i've also been putting up videos and stuff uh in the past i've made a couple of craft videos

[02:01:11]
i've made uh estus cocktails if you're into that i've made uh estus pizza oh yeah i've seen that

[02:01:16]
yeah they estus cocktails are good man um listener of the show lochle mcdonald told me that he got

[02:01:23]
the third drunkest and third illest he's ever been on those that's amazing that's the best thing to do

[02:01:28]
it on yeah man uh and i've also been doing a dark souls uh one uh one bro run which is where you

[02:01:34]
beat the game at level one and never level up and oh it's difficult oh it's difficult uh but i've

[02:01:42]
been slapping up 10 15 minutes episodes of that every couple of days more is an incentive for me to

[02:01:46]
finish it so that sounds like playing a hotline miami within dark souls is what that sounds like

[02:01:51]
it basically is it's like do a good job did you do a good job did you mistake once start again

[02:01:56]
start again yeah all over there are things there are things you can do and i'm actually doing

[02:01:59]
rather well at them and i'm pretty proud of myself at the moment um so yeah i think that's

[02:02:03]
everywhere you can find me yeah why not it's a lot of quality stuff so thanks it's got the

[02:02:09]
metal gear monday stamp of approval i don't know what the fuck that's worth but you do get that

[02:02:13]
patty so congratulations do you get like a key ring or something uh sure i yes we'll figure it out

[02:02:19]
it'll be wonderful i will click it in my current foxhound key ring it's actually a cardboard cut

[02:02:24]
out of big boss's face that you can uh with some rubber band just the wear around uh in front of your

[02:02:30]
face um yes but to the rubber the the fun part is the rubber band doesn't line up with the ipatch

[02:02:35]
band so i got like two frustrating it's awful so you really you have two eyes that you can't see

[02:02:42]
out realistically but anyway isaac where can people find you on the internet um mine

[02:02:48]
i love the reluctance every single time i ask you this question like i'm like obligated to be

[02:02:56]
like isaac where people find you because i asked the other people i know damn well where they can

[02:03:00]
find you nowhere they can't find anywhere um except for this like elephant graveyard twitter

[02:03:06]
account that you've been holding on to just for this it's good yeah i like it a lot it's been

[02:03:10]
treat me well you can hit me up at doesn't have a twitter dot com and how many are you on now

[02:03:20]
how many am i on how many followers or tweets i suppose that's divide by the other

[02:03:27]
divide followers by 10 let me look i have how many followers are you up to are you doing like a six

[02:03:34]
for 60 what if isaac happens to have like 17 000 now it's like out of the blue i have 59 oh so

[02:03:45]
sorry guys so no six for 60 today uh soon hopefully on the next one

[02:03:54]
well cool so let me run through the quick laundry list of shit that i am uh professionally and

[02:03:59]
personally uh obligated and not obligated to say but choose to say um you can go to forever

[02:04:05]
national dot com for all things metal gear monday's um right now so we actually just started our

[02:04:11]
dev diary podcast um and we spoke with ditto the head developer for the game goner um if you guys

[02:04:19]
are familiar with that from 2016 it's like this crazy hand drawn uh like platform game it's wonderful

[02:04:28]
but essentially james reichmuth from forever national uh hosts a podcast where he talks to

[02:04:33]
indie game developers all over the world once a week um and uh they talk about what it's like to

[02:04:40]
bust ass and be an independent creative with no money um and it's pretty fun uh it's been good

[02:04:45]
so far um besides that we have the forever national uh podcast the official podcast nocturnal

[02:04:51]
transmissions uh where we talk about uh filmmaking and like digital media creation and right now we

[02:04:57]
are uh kind of camping out on script writing uh screenplays and theater uh plays and stuff like

[02:05:04]
that um got a couple cool guests lined up but yeah if you want to support the studio we're currently

[02:05:08]
producing uh dev diary season two um which fingers crossed should hopefully be available through

[02:05:15]
a bunch of different distribution platforms like the first season um the first season's got some

[02:05:18]
really really big news that hopefully we can officially announce at some point soon um but uh

[02:05:23]
if you're interested in you can check out dev diary series dot com um but yeah that's pretty much it

[02:05:29]
you can uh patreon.com slash forever an astronaut to get uh all the podcasts at least a day early

[02:05:35]
sometimes earlier if i get the editing done sooner um you can also get the whole first season of dev

[02:05:39]
diary um if you want to uh right now it's uh 45 off on steam uh actually it's cheaper than the

[02:05:46]
patreon uh perk for you to just go get that first season if you've seen it definitely leave us a

[02:05:52]
rating on steam or imdb um and if you wouldn't mind with this show um please rate and review us on

[02:05:58]
itunes um or telefriend and please use hashtag metalgear mondays on twitter um so that i can pull

[02:06:05]
all your wonderful wonderful tweets uh when we do the listener response side ops and stuff like that

[02:06:11]
but yeah i will say this if you have feedback for act three of mgs4 or any of the previous acts

[02:06:17]
um email contact at forever and astronaut dot com um before i would say at least like before

[02:06:29]
wednesday if you haven't already um so two days after this releases um which is going to be let me

[02:06:36]
double check the date because i'm a lunatic and don't have dates memorized uh the 12th so april the

[02:06:43]
12th um i'm not entirely sure when we're going to be recording with sam and patty um but that seems

[02:06:49]
like a good time to do it um so we've got some responses from folks that we will address on

[02:06:54]
that episode regardless but for those of you who still haven't sent anything in you can use that

[02:06:59]
contact email or you can go to facebook.com slash metalgear mondays um that's it patty do you want

[02:07:06]
to take us to the whole uh well yeah well i i do have something i'd like to talk about i've got a

[02:07:14]
story that happened the other day okay okay well you see things right so so first i was afraid

[02:07:22]
i was petrified i was just looking for a thing to hide old snake inside so first i tried an oil

[02:07:29]
drum uh oil drum but that turned out to be dumb because johnny's tum had made some smells come out

[02:07:35]
his bum i threw it out and snake then hid behind a wall but it was small and snake decided to get rid

[02:07:42]
he found a flat thing stuck behind an open door it's made of cardboard and snake set it on the

[02:07:48]
floor that sneaky fox it's just a box just a box
